Mondays with Carol Yep, I finally did it! “Did what?” you might ask! Friday night, I took the POUND class and I loved it. I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to keep up or that the choreo would be too complicated but you know what? Just didn’t matter and I actually could keep up except for that jumping up in the air thing! And that’s what classes like POUND and ZUMBA should be about, are about and will always be about. SPECIALTY NIGHTS– that’s what we’ve been doing this month and I hope you’ve been enjoying the adventures with us. Our annual Morning of Yoga is a treat for the senses. Our first attempt at POUND on the Arena Floor was a rollicking good time. I’m very excited about what’s coming at the end of the month for our Yoga participants. Years ago, we offered a yoga class called YFCC (you’ll have to ask). It was held in the squash courts with music low and lights out. It was a closed class. With some convincing, a young girl was ‘allowed’ to join the group and she chose a spot in the back corner. It was an adventure. Slowly but surely, she loosened up her joints and lengthened her muscles. That young girl has grown into a wonderful young woman and she will be returning to Wingham for a family visit at the end of the month. And she comes back as a Registered Yoga Teacher (I’m beyond proud and pleased) and Rachel will be sharing her love of Yoga with us May 29th, 30th and 31st. Rachel will do a meet and greet on Monday after strength class, take over our regular Tuesday evening class at 6:30 and she will be leading a workshop on Wednesday at 6:30 on all things Yoga that you’ve been dying to try. How does this all tie together? I’m not really sure, but I know I thought I was going to die when Barbie Van Allen dragged me to ZUMBA training, I was even more sure I was going to die in POUND class, and I’m pretty sure medical assistance is going to be required when I try my first hand stand or maybe just that back bend – the workshop is going to be interesting. But the one thing I know for sure – it’s harder to ‘not try’ than it is to just do it. Stop worrying! Take a deep breath and then one giant step forward! That’s how I’m going to approach that hand stand ! #NorthHuronFitness #ZUMBA #POUND #YOGA cphillips@northhuron.ca 519 357 1208, ext 25 www.northhuron.ca

Fitness Fuel with Melissa Scott Train | Nourish | Transform ___________________________________________ Why am I never happy? It is surprising how often I hear this refrain from people. There is often nothing 'wrong' with their life but there is always an underlying feeling of disatisfaction. Were people this unhappy 50 years ago? It doesn't seem like it. My theory? I think we know too much and see too much. Damn that social media. What am I talking about? I love to run outside. Suddenly my run isn't good enough when I see that Susan running 10km to my 4 and Janine training for Warrior Dash. Should I be running further? Is running not enough - should I be competing? I can also see it in my reaction to 'challenge' posts. I am relatively happy with my physique, fitness level and nutrition choices but I see an 'after' picture and suddenly I am left judging myself to be an unmotivated, frumpy binge-eating slug. When these posts come out the simpliest way to deal with them is to attack. Put down the other person so their accomplishment isn't so big or attack yourself for not living up to their standard. Even if this dialogue is internal, it still leaves a mark. I have been working hard to change this pattern in myself for many years. I strive to (1) Be others' champion - we all have a battle we are fighting. The poster has been fighting one battle while you have been attacking somewhere/something else. Cheer them on. (2) Accept someone else's success does not equal a personal failure. (3) Accept who you are. Really, I don't want to race - I run to be alone and I don't want to ache in the hips - which happens anywhere past 8km for me. I have energy to do what I want everyday & a body I am happy with when I wear my jeans. Just because someone is accomplishing something wonderful & enviable doesn't mean their path is meant for me. ‪#‎NorthHuronFitness‬‬‬‬‬ mscott@northhuron.ca | 519.357.1208 x32 | www.northhuron.ca

THIS. IS. POUND - Rockout. Workout.

Fitness Fuel with Julia Jacobs Train | Nourish | Transform _______________________ We've been blasting you with all these new fitness classes, one of them being Pound. You are probably wondering what the heck everything is Well, I like to say Pound is my little baby. And here is it's story. The first time I ever heard about Pound I was reading the CanFitPro conference book trying to figure out what I was going to take. Then all the sudden I came across one that was intriguing. "A full-body cardio jam session, combining light resistance with constant simulated drumming..." WHAT?! I immediately googled it, youtubed it, etc and fell in love. Of course I signed up...So here we are at Conference, me 7 months pregnant, I walked into this room, not sure what to expect. The first beat hit and I was energized, pumped, empowered, and 12 songs later, 45 minutes was up and I was left wanting more! So I set out to bring it back to you! I love pound for so many reasons! It's fun, energizing, loud and 45 minutes goes by in a breeze. You'll get about 1000 squats in, strike the Ripstix over 15,000 time and not even know it. Anyone can do it and you get to become your own rockstar and let loose, all while getting an amazing workout in! It's a workout that doesn't feel like a workout, but instead more like a concert! Have I intrigued you yet? Friday night, Pound Party, you me and a set of Ripstix, bring your wild side, cause were rocking out! _______________________ #NorthHuronFitness #Pound #RockoutWorkout #Ripstix #JoinMe #BecomeARockstar jjacobs@northhuron.ca | 519.357.1208 x25

Mondays with Carol Sunday I spent the entire day fighting with myself over insidious food cravings. I wanted chocolate, I wanted French Fries, I was willing to indulge in an order of Poutine for that hit of hot steamy cheesey goodness. I was literally holding myself back from grabbing my debit card and heading over to the local fries joint and cash out a cheeseburger and side of comfort. I did (and I will admit this) go to the dollar store for some licorice, ginger ale and chocolate bars. Then this weird thing happened. I got home, unpacked the bag and made a salad. And that salad, it was dressed with a homemade vinegar rich dressing that satisfied my craving for some tangy flavours. I happily went back to my list of Sunday chores, and have spent the rest of the day puttering around getting things in order for Monday. Later in the day, I was back to craving those fries again. What the heck was that about? So, I had to ask myself – what did I really want? With a relentless craving, your body is telling you something – in code. It’s missing a macro-nutrient and your brain is sending out signals to get that nutritional need met. I stopped myself in mid-argument and asked myself – what’s missing today? Why fries? And it hit me like a bolt of electricity – carbs! I was missing starchy carbs. So, a healthy portion of pasta with pesto for supper and crisis successfully averted. But let’s get real here – an occasional order of fries does not constitute a crisis, that’s just crazy talk. The greater lesson here is about listening to your cravings and being mindful of what your body is asking for. Melissa would call this attuned eating. It’s a good thing. Good Nutrition –it’s a mind game. \ #JustEatRealFood #AttunedEating #GoodCarbs #NorthHuronFitness cphillips@northhuron.ca 519 357 1208, ext 25 www.northhuron.ca
