Our growing research portfolio attracted $65 million in research funding in 2011/12. Waterloo’s unique inventor-owned intellectual property policy makes us a leader in the transfer of ideas and technology. In our research, as in all else, we are oriented to the needs of society, and work closely with industry, government, medicine, and more.

Our faculty members have an impressive record of achievement, including 18 Canada Research Chairs, an Ontario Research Chair, 19 Premier's Research Excellence Awards, over 40 Early Researcher Awards, six NSERC industrial research chairs, and an NSERC design chair.

Today we remember Stephen Hawking and thank him for his monumental contributions to modern physics, as well as the lasting impact he has had on the scientific community. To quote Neil deGrasse Tyson: "his passing has left an intellectual vacuum in his wake. But it's not empty. Think of it as a kind of vacuum energy permeating the fabric of spacetime that defies measure."
