While maintaining trails today our staff came across some salamander friends seeking refuge under a log! Notice the two different species. The larger salamander, a Spotted Salamander, is a member of the mole salamander family. These salamanders are terrestrial and spend most of their time underground or beneath objects. The second salamander is a Red-backed Salamander, a member of the lungless salamander family. These salamanders breathe through their skin and membranes in the mouth and throat. Seeing both salamanders together was an exciting find for park staff!
