District 2 Alberta Jr Rodeo at Lakeland

Last weekend saw the 2nd annual District 2 Alberta Jr Rodeo competition held at Lakeland College. The event featured high school rodeo competitors from all over central Alberta. This year two more events were added (Cutting, Working Cow Horse) making it even bigger. Here are some photo highlights featuring action from the young rodeo stars. Second annual Alberta High School Rodeo at Lakeland College

Last year this event drew over 90 high school rodeo competitors from central Alberta to compete here at Lakeland College, and this year we are adding two more events (Cutting, Working Cow Horse) as well as a Jr. High Rodeo making it even bigger. The event is on Friday through to Sunday. Admission is free for anyone to come and support our young rodeo stars. The schedule is as follows: Friday, May 12: 12:00 pm: District 2 Alberta Jr. High Rodeo 7:00 pm: District 2 Alberta High School Rodeo Cutting and Working Cow Horse Events Saturday, May 13: 10:00 am: District 2 Alberta High School Rodeo 7:00 pm: District 2 Alberta High School Rodeo Cutting and Working Cow Horse Events Sunday, May 14: 9:00 am: District 2 Alberta High School Rodeo Feel free to contact me if you have any questions regarding this event!

Lakeland College and the AHT faculty and staff helped to host a CE event on May 9 on the Vermilion Campus. The evening was sponsored by Royal Canin Veterinary diets. Attendees included veterinarians, veterinary technologists and veterinary support staff from Vermilion, Lloydminster, Wainwright and Provost.

Young Farm Workers – Vermilion 2017 |

Still looking for a summer position … check out the Rangeland Ecology & Management research position. The Rangeland Research Institute at the University of Alberta is looking to hire someone from May to August 2017. Possible extension into September. Projects will include: • Assessment of mixed-grass prairie recovery following powerline construction • Studies assessing defoliation and moisture effects on mixed-grass prairie Students enrolled in a post-secondary program in agriculture are eligible to apply. Well, 45 of our amazing Student Managed Enterprise students did just that and they rocked it! Working Cowboy Cow Horse 2017

The annual Working Cowboy Cow Horse competition was held friday April 21. This annual event is another hands-on experience for students in the western ranch and cow horse program who plan and host the event. Students work with instructors to organize the competition events (Ranch cutting, Ranch roping, Horse/rider/stock dog trial) to find a working cowboy champion. In the evening ranch horse teams competed in sorting and doctoring cattle events.

Young Farm Worker Safety Days |

Young Farmer Safety Day will be held on May 10, 2017, at Lakeland College in Vermilion. Open to ALL high school students (grades 10 to 12): - Can earn 1 high school credit - Alberta Agriculture will pay the fee for any students registered in the Green Certificate program Sessions include: - Utilities on the farm - Shop safety - Fire extinguisher training - Farm machinery safety - Livestock handling - Field crop chemical safety There will be demonstrations and hands-on training with safety experts.
