If you see training programs for youth where resisted movements are almost always identical to the sport specific movement, look for something else. There is a level of overall athleticism that is seems to be missing in many young athletes. I hear this from National Team and Professional coaches often. This can only be developed with diversity in training, reducing early specialization, and stepping away from the main sport for a period of time each year. Counter movements, mobility, stability, speed and overall strength are a few important factors for off season training in any sport. It can be counter productive to encourage athletes into summer sport camps, especially those which just focus on the primary sport of choice. It's all about long term athlete development, not 10,000 hours on court/field ASAP.

Preventing Baseball Injuries: Actions Speak Louder Than Words

I share a lot of Eric Cressey's stuff because I respect him very much, especially when it comes to shoulder health. Eric trains many MLB and future MLB pitchers, and in the absence of significant research on volleyball hitters, some of this information can also be useful to our volleyball community. I have been a big proponent of an off season for Vball players so they can properly focus on developing strength. The reality is, most of our volleyball athletes are spending their off time (march break, Christmas, etc) and summer breaks playing more volleyball. Clubs have designed it this way with house leagues, clinics, beach camps etc. Eric's article, linked below, definitely makes the case well for baseball pitchers. It looks like some of the leagues are slowly getting behind it ... Slowly. I would really like to see more of this from our volleyball community. Are we really interested in what is best for our athletes in the long term? Have we done a good job in making appropriate strength training protocols available to them and educating them on their value? Food for thought. http://www.ericcressey.com/preventing-baseball-injuries-actions-speak-louder-than-words
