Scripture: Ephesians 4:25-32 (https://www.bible.com/bible/111/eph.4) Reflection: "Sinful anger is the womb from which feelings of revenge and retaliation are born. Its manifestation is unique in each person's life. If unbridled, rage causes others to scramble; if harboured within and nursed, ot can seethe and hiss like a snake filled with the venom of resentment. Often it refuses to recognize the presence and dignity of the other." ~ Albert Hasse "Anger toward people with whom we have close relationships is never simple. There are always old wounds, unresolved tensions and other complications which enter into the equation." ~ Michael Mangis Prayer: Spirit of God, who gives relationships and communities value and purpose, help me to dwell less and less on my angry frustration with others and help me to focus more and more on the forgiveness of Jesus.

Scripture: Genesis 4:1-15 (https://www.bible.com/bible/111/gen.4) Reflection: "The sin of anger or wrath arguably causes more harm in our world than all of the other sins combined …. When anger shows up it often takes over." ~ Michael Mangis “Of the Seven Deadly Sins, anger is possibly the most fun. To lick your wounds, to smack your lips over grievances long past, to roll over your tongue the prospect of bitter confrontations still to come, to savor to the last toothsome morsel both the pain you are given and the pain you are giving back--in many ways it is a feast fit for a king. The chief drawback is that what you are wolfing down is yourself. The skeleton at the feast is you.” ~ Frederick Buechner “One man may be so placed that his anger sheds the blood of thousands, and another so placed that however angry he gets he will only be laughed at. But the little mark on the soul may be much the same in both. Each has done something to himself which, unless he repents, will make it harder for him to keep out of the rage next time he is tempted, and will make the rage worse when he does fall into it." ~ C.S Lewis Prayer: Lord, as I meditate on this scripture please speak to me. Speak to me about the anger of Cain. Speak to me about my own anger. But most of all, speak to me about your grace which is able to overcome even my most violent anger. Amen.

Assistant Thunder coach Monty Williams delivers powerful message at his wife's funeral services

"Everybody is praying for me and my family, and that is right, but let us not forget that there were two people in this situation, and that family needs prayer as well. And we have no ill will toward that family. In my house, we have a sign that says ‘As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.’ We cannot serve the Lord if we don’t have a heart of forgiveness.” Two weeks ago, NBA coach Monty Williams’s wife was killed when a speeding car veered into oncoming traffic and hit her vehicle head on. At her memorial service, Monty spoke and his words were full of God’s love. At a time when Monty had every right to be angry, he choose love. He chose the Gospel. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OEzHvImTu0o

Scripture: 1 John 2:15-17 (https://www.bible.com/bible/111/1jn.2) “Lust thrives in privacy and isolation, and lustful people often feel shame, which also motivates them to keep their struggles hidden from others. But when we hide our sin and deny it, we cannot confess it or deal with it. This means lust’s remedy requires community, openness, and accountability ... The best advice, then, for resisting lust is not to get an Internet filter (although you should do that too!), but to have good friends. If we have genuine friendships in which we learn to give and receive love in a healthy and satisfying way, we will be less inclined to wander off looking for sham substitutes and quick fixes.” ~ Rebecca Konyndyk DeYoung Prayer: Jesus, help me to to find a community in the community you are forming, the church, who remind me of your great love that far surpasses any lust I could have for the world. Root me in meaningful relationships centred on you. Amen.

Scripture: 2 Samuel 11:2-5,14-26 (https://www.bible.com/bible/111/2sa.11) "The sin of lust has its root in the belief that God's love is not enough to satisfy our longing for intimacy. We suspect that God is unfairly withholding from us something that we need." ~ Michael Mangis, Signature Sins: Taming Our Wayward Hearts “Lust is the craving for salt of a man who is dying of thirst.” ~ Frederick Buechner Prayer: Spirit, you are the greatest gift that can be given, and yet I look for something more elsewhere only to be disappointed. Fill me afresh this day with your love and power, that I would find my joy in you. Amen.

Scripture: 2 Corinthians 12:6-10 (https://www.bible.com/bible/111/2co.12) “As long as you are proud you cannot know God. A proud man is always looking down on things and people; and, of course, as long as you are looking down, you cannot see something that is above you.” ~ C.S. Lewis “The devilish strategy of Pride is that it attacks us, not in our weakest points, but in our strongest. It is pre-eminently the sin of the noble mind.” ~ Dorothy Sayers Prayer: Lord Jesus, make me cognizant of my weaknesses through which you are strong – and humble in my strengths through which I can be made weak. Amen.

A devotional for the second day of Lent: Scripture: Ephesians 2:3-9 (https://www.bible.com/bible/111/eph.2) “Tragically, vainglory wins applause and approval at the price of distancing ourselves from others. Relationships cannot flourish when we dupe or use others - as sources of flattery, as a dully background against which we can shine, or as tools in our reputation-building program ... communion with others is among vainglory’s greatest casualties.” ~ Rebecca Konyendyk "Pride is found in the self service lane, where it pumps more and more and more hot air into an already bloated ego. It constantly seeks approval from others and yet, at the same time, doesn't respect them." ~ Albert Haase “Our pride drives us to want to earn our salvation by doing enough good deeds so that the Heavenly Father will owe us eternal life.” ~ Tony Campolo Prayer: Holy Spirit, help me to depend on your strength for life and flourishing and to relinquish all desire to work in my own power. In Jesus name, amen.
