A notice to all boaters traveling south along the north shore from U.S. Customs: The U.S. Customs prefers to have all boats report to the closest dock to the Grand Portage Port of Entry since we no longer staff the office in Grand Marais, MN. The closest dock is the Grand Portage Marina, we understand most large sail boats won’t fit so the next dock would be located in Horse Shoe Bay between Big Bay and Chicago Bay in Hovland, MN. The approximate GPS coordinates for Horse Shoe Bay are: Lat 47º 51.02 Lon 89º 56.09 (20.9 miles northeast of Grand Marais and 16.2 miles southwest of Grand Portage). For a map and images of Horse Shoe Bay click on the following link: http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/water_access/harbors/horseshoe_bay.html If anyone has any questions or concerns please call the Grand Portage Port of Entry at 218-475-2244 and ask for a supervisor.
