Final count for this hatch - 6 fluffy chicks. All getting thoroughly spoiled and cuddled by the kids. Even belly rubs!

3 chicks arrived during the night. Almost 2 days early. One is pretty small but they all seemed to be doing well when I moved them to the brooder this morning.

It's day 18 for our first hatch of the year - lockdown day! In the next 3 days the chicks will prepare to make their entrance into the world. We'll take the turner out and increase humidity to give them the best environment to hatch. First pic is candling at day 7. The embryo is the little dark spot - pretty tiny! Second pic is candling today. Embryo is so big it fills the whole shell except the air sac. We mark the air sac partly to verify that everything has progressed well since day 7 (See the difference in pic 3?) and also to predict where the first pip will appear! (the lowest part of the air sac where we've drawn the circle). We place the eggs back in the incubator with this side up so that the hatching chicks see daylight instead of floor when they first peak out!
