I have some very sad news. My beautiful boy FLASH went to the bridge to wait for me on Saturday, February 17, 2018 at 10:43 am. The last few months he was really been struggling to walk and I had to let him go. This was incredibly difficult as his mind, eyesight, hearing were that of a much younger dog. He reminded me of an ALS patient whose mind is in tact, but their body lets them down. FLASH came into rescue on June 3, 2013. He was brought to me by Camillia Lyons De Meyer who had found him on a highway north of Stony Mountain and at first believed he had been hit by a car. They tracked the owner down, who no longer wanted him and then called me to see if I would bring him into rescue. He was thought to be 7 or 8 years old. They took him to Dr. Luc who determined that he had not been hit by a car but had a back injury likely caused by being kicked in the face as a puppy (hard enough to break his nose and damage two disks in his back) . Thank you Camillia for bringing FLASH to me that fateful day. FLASH is the only dog we have every asked the public to help with financially. We needed help to fund his operation in Saskatoon. This is the only time we have every asked for money and boy did the help come in. Within a month we had enough to cover his operation. We knew the operation would buy him a few more years of mobility and it did, until it didn't. Thank you Dr. Brenda Holyk for taking FLASH to Saskatoon when I could not. We were all set to go in July, 2013 when FLASH had a bladder bleed and was unable to have the operation. I had booked off holidays in order to go to Saskatoon with my boy, but FLASH had other ideas. FLASH had 3 foster homes, the first was with the Mackay's of Matlock, second was with Dennis and Sandra Watson of Steinbach and third was with Jonathan and Rachel Avey of Winnipeg, who originally were going to adopt but started a family, so decided to permanently foster. FLASH even went on an adoption trial in between, but the family did not anticipate how much it takes to look after an incontinent dog and felt it best to return him. Bless their hearts for trying. Thank you Barbara Hache for loving this big boy and for you and Marc. building his ramp into the house. He used to run up that ramp and if I had a treat he galloped up the ramp. Many more little seniors have and will continue to use FLASH'S ramp. FLASH lived out his final years with me surrounded by love. He was an easy boy to love. His tail never stopped wagging. He greeted everyone who came to my home. He really thought everyone came to the home to see him. FLASH still had his fan club, people who still asked about him. He had stopped attending events long ago as it was just too hard on him. I miss him more than words can say. He was a large part of my daily routine and my life. I know he is pain free and running around like a puppy and that helps. FLASH left this world knowing he was loved. He had a very peaceful passing and I have another angel to look over me.
