Where are the SADI books? Survivor’s Hope Crisis Centre provides crisis intervention, support and information to survivors and secondary victims of sexual assault in north-eastern Manitoba. Their programs and outreach are described on their website survivors-hope.ca. They have a collection of books in their office and over 10 years ago they approached our library with a view to making their books more available to the community at large. As a result, a number of books with information on the steps to self healing and recovery from violence were placed in Pinawa Public Library for use by the local public and beyond, through interlibrary loan. SADI is the educational division of Survivor’s Hope and the books they placed with us were dubbed the SADI collection and given a section of their own. In an effort to make these books more discoverable, we recently we integrated the SADI books into our Adult Non-Fiction collection. Their call no. still identifies them as SADI, but they are now side by side the Library’s books on the same subjects. Please ask if you need help finding these or any books in the Library.

Friends of the Ironwood Trail have completed the revegetation plan, furniture branding, pergola development, installation of interpretive signs and recycle garbage receptacles in The Ironwood Park. They have prepared four management guides: Site Furniture, Forest Management, Pruning and Park Maintenance. These guides will be catalogued as part of our ‘Pinawa’ collection. Please leave them in the Library for others to see.

FOR PEACE OF MIND The IERHA Suicide Prevention Committee’s mission is to support initiatives that are designed to prevent the occurrence of suicide by promoting mental well-being and encouraging help-seeking behaviours through awareness and educational activities/resources. They have donated to us a wonderful selection of books about mental health for children and adults. Timed to coincide with Mental Health Awareness Week May 1-7, 2017, we have just received this donation and will work as quickly as possible to catalogue them for circulation. Until they’re ready to borrow, ask us if you’d like to see these items and let us know if you’d like to place a hold. In the meantime, check out our existing collection of books about mental health in the 616.8 section of the Library. In addition, our ‘Feelings’ Parent Pack includes books for kids about mental health and depression. Each bag in our Parent Pack collection contains resources on a single topic, aimed at both parents and kids. These bags are designed for busy parents on the go, an initiative of Pinawa’s grassroots group.

Whiteshell Laboratories by Chris Saunders, Whiteshell History Committee The first of two local history books is now available in print and it’s at the Library. Whiteshell Laboratories is a history of “the plant,” as it’s known to locals. It spans the years from the beginning in the 60s, through to the decommissioning project, full of stories from many who had a career with AECL. Enjoy the photos and the memories! If you’d like your own copy, this book is currently available for sale at the LGD of Pinawa office. Or you can purchase it at amazon.ca. There is also an online version with more content, and more colour pictures, than the printed book. Find the online version at our website www.pinawapubliclibrary.com, follow the links About Us and Local History. There you will also find the online version of Pinawa: 50 years of Memories, Families and Friends by Chris Saunders and Louise Daymond, Pinawa History Committee. The print version of this book will be available soon.
