Frenchman's Bay Sailing School: Pickering
Description
FBYC Sailing School is dedicated to making sure every student learns the skills necessary to have fun on the water. Is it a Summer Camp? A Sailing School? A Race Team?
Simply put, its all three.
For 8 weeks every summer the grounds of Frenchman's Bay Yacht Club are full of the fun and games and friendships you'd find at any summer camp. There are dress-up days, picnics, swimming and afternoons at the beach.
But that's not all...
Our nationally-recognised FBYC Sailing School is run by our exceptional instructors and coaches, many of whom are graduates of the program themselves! We teach and certify students using the Sail Canada standards. Students enjoy a fun, safe program that promotes exercise, develops self-confidence and teaches sportsmanship. Quality sailboats and our warm natural bay allows for the best hands-on experience.
And if that's not enough...
The award winning FBYC Race Team include racers in three classes of boats (420's, Laser, and Optimist.) FBYC racers have received recognition across Lake Ontario and around the world. We have even launched two Olympic careers!

A great article in the Toronto Star today about "bubble wrapped kids." What makes it great is that its a program led by the kids themselves. http://www.thestar.com/news/canada/2016/02/22/kids-ask-adults-to-back-off-give-them-freedom-to-fall-down-make-mistakes.html
Raising Kids with Adventurous Spirits
"What kind of child do you have?" That seems like a innocuous question... but your child's tolerance (or appreciation for) adventure probably has more to do with your reaction to their activities, than any innate personality trait in them. http://www.positiveparentingconnection.net/raising-kids-with-adventurous-spirits/

We are thrilled to announce two new instructors for the 2016 season! Sean Magee-Saxton is joining us as our new Head Instructor. Sean has been racing, teaching and coaching all over Lake Ontario for years. He is a member of the Queens University Sailing team and he has represented Canada internationally as well! Also joining the crew for this summer is Isabella Zeeb. Issy has been a student and a racer with FBYC since she was a very young girl. Now she is ready to share her passion for sailing and her unending smile with a new generation of kids! Please join me in welcoming these two fine sailors to FBYC Sailing School. http://www.fbycsailingschool.com/#!instructors/t2fk5

There’s some big changes at FBYC Sailing School this summer. This year we are saying goodbye to a couple of well loved and extremely talented instructors. Meghan Rutitis has been around FBYC for the past 12 years, as a sailing school attendee, a racer, a teacher and finally, our head instructor. She filled all these roles with passion, enthusiasm, and a great big smile. Ceilidh Welch practically grew up at FBYC. She started sailing at the club when she was 10, and progressed through to racing, and then became the wonderful teacher that the kids know and love. With amazing patience and nurturing, she shared her love of sailing to a new generation of sailors. Both Meghan and Ceilidh are moving on to careers on dry land and we wish them all the success in the world. Connor McNeil however, is going nowhere. We are thrilled to announce that Connor is returning as race coach for another season. And he’ll be busy: We’ve got a very promising roster of racers for the 2016 season. Tomorrow we’ll announce our two new instructors. Stay tuned!

Big news from FBYC Sailing School! We’ve partnered with Camp Riverwood for the summer of 2016. If you don’t know about Riverwood, you should. It’s a fabulously fun camp right here in Pickering. They operate out of the Petticoat Conservation Area at the foot of Whites Road, just around the corner from FBYC. This summer, kids at Camp Riverwood can select “sailing” as their optional activity and they’ll be brought over to FBYC for an on water adventure. Kids need adventure. Parents need to teach them how. - Family Adventure Project
On a Sunday morning, on a day a lot of us are probably going to watch a lot of TV.... I figured I'd post this: 85% of kids say they want more adventure, 85% of parents think that’s a good idea, but it doesn’t really happen much. Why? Because sometimes as parents we don’t let them. http://www.familyadventureproject.org/2011/12/kids-need-adventure-parents-need-to-teach-them-how/

It might be winter in Pickering... but Brenda Bowskill and the rest of the Canadian sailors are heating up in Miami! Best of all Paul Tingley, Scott Lutes and Logan Campbell scored a pair of firsts in Paralympic racing. This event is a qualifier for the Rio Olympics so the pressure is huge. http://www.sailing.ca/canadian-team-set-for-gold-fleet-action-day-3-sailing-world-cup-miami-p199301
