It was 100 years ago this spring that women in Nova Scotia received the right to vote. Women had to be British subjects and own property to the tune of $150 or a combination of property and possessions of $300+. The first woman elected to the NS Legislature was in 1920 and she was in Cumberland County riding. Interestingly, it took until 1960 for the Canada wide right to vote for Indigenous Peoples. https://nslegislature.ca/about/history/women-in-nova-scotia-politics

Looking for Stories and Memories of the 1918 flu pandemic This year marks 100 years since the worst flu pandemic in recorded history – the Spanish influenza of 1918. It is thought to have killed 50 – 100 million people worldwide. The Parrsborough Shore Historical Society is interested in collecting stories and memories from those whose parents, grandparents, and others were impacted by this outbreak; those who perished, those who survived and those who cared for them. If you have such a story, or perhaps a letter saved in a shoe-box, leave a comment so we can reach you, or call 902-254-2092, or email Ottawa.house@ns.sympatico.ca.
