Ottawa Citizen
Description
'Fair play and day light' since 1845 And so it was that on March 29, 1845, a balmy Saturday 22 years before Canada became a country, a 29-year-old Irish immigrant gave Bytown "The Packet", its first liberal newspaper. Under the banner on Page One, Harris printed the words "Fair Play and Daylight", the paper's motto. One hundred and sixty years later, those words still appear in The Ottawa Citizen, the newspaper that grew from that four-page journal.
