One of Our fave 2016 Represses! ❤️ Une de nos rééditions favorites de 2016 ! ❤️ Dean Blunt & Inga Copeland - Black Is Beautiful - Hyperdub Records - (Caila & Justin's Pick): "In 2012, the duo formerly known as Hype Williams released this gem on Kode9's label. Their trademark hypnotic, queasy grooves abound, and the whacked-out voices intoning the names of every single Pokemon (Rescue Dawn, 2010) have been excised. Yet it remains essentially confrontational, from its function-over-form song names, numbered from 2 to 15 to the awkward gaps between tracks, which either stop abruptly or fade into long, disconcerting silences. proudly low-tech, sometimes ugly, often humorous and, crucially, capable of carrying multiple meanings. Blunt and Copeland ensure their abstract atmospheres and collaged samples remain open and undefined. Disguised as innocuous new age noodling or rhythmic Casio grooves which devolve with each repetition, they’re nonetheless detached from any recognisable genre label. Copeland's sighing vocals are haunting and vivid, riding DIY footwork rhythms or playing at pure pop. Plenty of creepy keyboard reveries, warped vocal loops, miasmic synths and sub-low baselines. It's hard to isolate what it is exactly, but lurking somewhere behind their broken keyboards and tape decks is something profoundly moving and beautiful." - Dummy mag / Boomkat

Happy Holidays! Here's another 2016 staff favorite! ❤️ Joyeuses fêtes! Voici un autre album 2016 qu'on adore! ❤️ Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith – EARS (Brendan's Pick): "In a year when the world lost Don Buchla, one of music’s most exciting new visionaries has taken his Music Easel and made her definitive statement. Synthesizers pulse, woodwinds flutter, and Smith’s processed voice leads the way. EARS is a wholly immersive and truly staggering natural world, equal parts organic and electronic." - Aquarium Drunkard

Another 2016 staff favorite! ❤️ Un autre album 2016 qu'on adore! ❤️ Aphex Twin - Cheetah (Jordan & Jason's pick): Richard D. James' latest Warp Records release offers his own take on stripped down, four-to-the-floor, electronic music. The cheekily promoted record's title is a reference to a british electronics company called Cheetah, active in the late ’80s and early ’90s and the Cheetah MS800, a short-lived digital synthesizer which James presumably used to create most of the tracks 🎹

Justin & Jason's Staff Pick ! Une de nos sorties préférés de l'année! Yves Tumor - Serpent Music (PAN records) 🐍 🐍 🐍 The enigmatic Tennessee-raised, Turin Born Yves Tumor presents a poignant album recorded between Miami, Leipzig, Los Angeles and Berlin over three years. The album spans sonically diverse and richly textured pieces, formed from live organic instruments, samples and various field recordings. Dreamlike lo-fi psychedelia sits alongside broken electronic experimentations, ambient compositions between abrasive noise, offering insight into a haunting otherworld.

Staff Picks! ❤️les sorties préférées de l'année du personnel au phonopolis ❤️ Kendrick Lamar - Untitled Unmastered (Jordan & Justin's pick): ❤️ Rap gems steeped in avant-jazz,soul & funk. Lots of love for this politically-charged collection of demos that never made it onto Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp A Butterfly, due to sample clearances and deadlines. Epic collaborations with Thundercat, Terrace Martin, Adrian Younge Ali Shaheed Muhammad (ATCQ), SZA, CeeLo Green & more.
