Region of Queens Municipality
Description
Information regarding activities in the Region of Queens Muncipality We are fortunate to be living in the Region of Queens! As the southern gateway to the UNESCO Southwest Nova Biosphere, we enjoy an exceptional quality of life. Enviable access to health care, a strong academic research and development community and a thriving and diverse arts and culture scene makes Queens a fantastic place to live for people of all ages.
With Council continually investing in the future of the community, the Municipality works hard to achieve its vision of a place where "communities respect the natural environment, possess strong character, enjoy access to a variety of recreational opportunities and continue to develop an economy that builds on the assets of the Region as a whole." Municipal Planning Strategy, 2009

Are you a community coach that would like to take your skills to the next level? If so, the Nova Scotia Mentorship Program may be for you, and is being piloted on the South Shore this year. The goal of this new initiative is to pair experienced Nova Scotia community coaches with upcoming, committed coaches who are looking to grow in their roles, to increase the opportunities for coaches to work with those in other sports and see what other contexts look like and to increase the success rates of upcoming coaches. If you have any questions, please call Nicole Kenney, Regional Sport Consultant for the South Shore at 902-634-7570. More information can be found below, and applications are due February 28, 2018.

Check out the Ripples Larry Weagle is making! Read about his volunteer contributions here: http://www.regionofqueens.com/municipal-services/recreation/volunteering/overview The Ripple Effect Volunteer Initiative is a volunteer recognition program that showcases the great work of volunteers in Queens County. Anyone can thank a volunteer for their hard work by nominating them for the recognition, the form is in the link above. Over the past few weeks, we've posted Ripple Effect posts more frequently than usual, as we received a number of nominations at the deadline for submissions. Those nominated by January 31, 2018 were included in Council's selection of two volunteers to represent Queens as our Volunteers of the Year at the Annual Provincial Volunteer Awards Ceremony. We are all caught up on posting the 2017/2018 nominees now, and are looking forward to receiving your nominations for 2018/2019! We accept nominations all year long - if a volunteer has made your community or life better, thank them by nominating them for recognition through the Ripple Effect Volunteer initiative - and all in the community will learn about the work they do, and impact volunteers make!

Have you been enjoying these beautiful spring-like days? As February is Heart Month and with such a mild and snow-free winter it's a perfect time to consider adding physical activity to your daily routine. It’s always a good idea to add physical activity to your life, regardless of your age, as doing so can dramatically lower your risk of heart disease and stroke and help prevent and control risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, certain types of cancer, and obesity. Regular physical activity can also reduce stress levels and increase energy, improve your sleep and digestion and has been shown to slow the physical decline of aging! There are lots of online resources - https://www.heartandstroke.ca/get-healthy/stay-active - to help you get started, so during Heart Month 2018 why not do yourself and your heart a favour, and get moving!
Keep in mind that if there is a snowfall, vehicles are not permitted to be parked (attended or unattended) on roadways in such a way to interfere with snow removal.
