Northern Carvers Gallery
Description
An online gallery of the works of art I collected and purchased directly from the artists I met while working on Baffin Island. Welcome,
Northern Carvers Gallery is a site specializing in the unique and rare work of artists from the community of Cape Dorset - the well known carving capital of Nunavut. This form of art (prints and carvings) was first promoted by James Houston in 1957.
Cape Dorset (Kinngait-meaning high mountains) is a beautiful island community of approximately 1200 people nestled among the mountains of the Foxe Peninsula. This island is located on the southwestern tip of Baffin Island in the territory of Nunavut where the terrain is that of jagged mountains and treeless tundra. This land of the midnight sun (summer) and long dark days (winter) is home to some of the most beautiful sunsets in the world. Printmaking and carvings are the main source of income depicting the lives of these Inuit people, telling stories of legends, animals and birds living on this northern land.
