Public Service Announcement Road Grading May 2017 (Iqaluit, Nunavut) The City of Iqaluit wishes to acknowledge the concern expressed by our residents with the present state of municipal roadways. Our roads maintenance crews have been working daily to keep atop of operational demands with the ongoing spring melt. Warmer weather and snow melt create ideal conditions for roads to degrade and potholes to form. The roads maintenance crews are presently working to address all problem areas by clearing snow, clearing culverts, and maintaining the flow of water along road edges. Road grading along the more significantly impacted roadways is now underway; we kindly request the understanding of residents as we attempt to keep on top of all problem areas. As we continue to address the situation, we would ask for your diligence when operating motors vehicles by reducing speeds, obeying posted road signs and respecting the space of roads equipment while they address these issues. (ᐃᓄᑦᑎᑑᖅᑐᑦ ᑭᖑᓪᓖᑦ) NEWS RELEASE LAUNCH OF JIMMY KILABUK CHILDREN’S RECREATION FUND APRIL 18, 2017 (IQALUIT, NUNAVUT) - Iqaluit Mayor Madeleine Redfern is pleased to announce the launch of the Jimmy Kilabuk Children’s Recreation Fund – a fee assistance program designed to ensure that Inuit children and their families have access to the Aquatic Centre and its programs. “In memory of a beloved former Mayor and Council member, who held a vision to build an aquatic centre for the children of Iqaluit, I am proud to launch this new City initiative,” said Mayor Redfern. “Jimmy would be so pleased to know that through his dedication, families who require assistance are now able to access this wonderful facility.” To launch this initiative, the City of Iqaluit, through the REACH (Recreation, Environmental Leadership, Aquatic Centre, Community Building, Healthy Living) program, has contributed more than $100 thousand to support the fund. Today’s announcement is for phase one of this program, which provides support for families to have access to the pool and pool programs. The program will be eventually expanded to include other Aquatic Centre programs. The program is intended to assist those children who have the greatest need for assistance. To apply, eligible residents are asked to complete an application form, that can be obtained on-line or at the Aquatic Centre. As the Fund continues to grow, the City will seek to broaden the parameters of this program to include all families who require fee assistance.
