We've had some exciting developments recently. Peninsula Ridge Estate Winery and Restaurant is offering huge support for the Hawkwatch’s Educational programme. Mr Norm Beal, President of Peninsula Ridge, was pleased to announce that the funds for the $500.00 high school scholarship will be provided to the Hawkwatch by the winery. This is fantastic news for the Hawkwatch. Peninsula Ridge Winery is located right on the border of Grimsby and Beamsville on Hwy 8 right on the spring raptor migration route. They are the second local company to bring major support to the Hawkwatch this year. Recently we were also able to announce that Station One Coffeehouse has selected the Hawkwatch as their charity for the month. A percentage of their hot drink sales in March will be donated to the Hawkwatch and will greatly assist with other parts of our educational programme. Members of the Hawkwatch and visitors to Beamer are encouraged to visit both businesses as part of their visit to Grimsby. The scholarship competition is still open. High school students are invited to check out the Hawkwatch website for full details about the scholarship. Closing date for entries is Feb 28, 2016. Visit: www.niagarapeninsulahawkwathch.org The Annual Open House for the Niagara Peninsula Hawkwatch is on Good Friday, March 25 at the Beamer Memorial Conservation Area. The Open House will have a live bird demonstration starting at 1:00 pm. Carla Carlson of Niagara Nature Tours will be putting on a children’s programme between 11:00 am and 2:00 pm. Johnnie Blonde food truck will be on site for hot beverages and food. 100 Field Guides to Birds of North America will be given out to students and their families at the Open House. Many local nature clubs will have their display and information at the Open House.

LEARN ABOUT THE SECRET LIVES OF RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS AT OUR ANNUAL BANQUET We have a special treat in store for the Annual Meeting and Banquet. Dr. Cheryl Dykstra is going to talk about "Secret Lives of Red-shouldered Hawks - the Fascinating and Little-known Behaviors of our Wild Neighbors". Cheryl is an independent consultant in Cincinnati, Ohio, and has been the Editor-in-chief of the Journal of Raptor Research for the last ten years. She earned her M.S. and Ph.D. in Wildlife Ecology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she studied Bald Eagles nesting along the shores of Lake Superior, and has since published more than 30 papers in peer-reviewed ornithological journals. After graduation she worked for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Cheryl and her colleagues have studied the ecology of Red-shouldered Hawks in southern Ohio for the last 19 years, during which time they have banded more than 2,200 nestling Red-shouldered Hawks and have recently used cameras to study nesting behavior. You can learn more about her studies by visiting: http://redshoulderedhawkstudy.com/. The Niagara Peninsula Hawkwatch enjoys an exceptional spring flight of Red-shouldered Hawks. A well-qualified speaker is a fitting tribute to this beautiful bird. Please make a special effort to come to St Andrews Church in Grimsby on Saturday, April 16. Socializing and the bucket raffle begin at 5:00 p.m. and dinner around 6:15. As always we welcome contributions to the bucket raffle. Tickets are $35 for members and $45 for non-members.
