ACCESS AWARENESS DAY - SATURDAY, JUNE 3, 2017 From the Social Planning and Research Council of British Columbia (SPARC BC): Celebrated annually on the first Saturday in June, Access Awareness Day is a comprehensive campaign to raise awareness about disability, accessibility, and inclusion. Access Awareness Day has been made possible because of dedicated and inspired individuals who understand the importance of inclusion; the recognition that both the right and the opportunity to participate in all aspects of human life enable individuals and communities to celebrate their diversity and recognize their responsibilities. Access Awareness Day is ultimately about more than just one day a year. It is a call to respond creatively and purposefully to build a society where barriers to inclusion are removed, and to ensure the independence, self-esteem, dignity, and security of all citizens. For more information and printable/shareable materials, please visit the SPARC BC website at: http://www.sparc.bc.ca/accessibility/access-awareness-day/

Council Update - Chipseal Program In recent months our staff have been publicly criticized for the Town’s Chipseal Program that was implemented in the Hillcrest neighbourhood. This criticism, directed primarily at our Director of Engineering, has been in person, on social media and in online publications. Not unlike any other employee/employer relationship, Council, as the employer, makes decisions and staff implement those decisions. The decision to use chipseal on those roads was made by a unanimous vote of Council and, as a Council, we cannot condone staff being villanized for our decisions.Read the full update from the two images attached or visit www.gibsons.ca

SHAW ROAD INTERSECTION IMPROVEMENTS Construction will be underway at the intersection of Shaw Road and O’Shea Road, commencing May 9, 2017 as we construct the intersection narrowing at this location. This narrowing will extend the sidewalk out as far as a parked vehicle, facilitating better visibility of and for pedestrians crossing Shaw Road. It will also shorten the crossing distance which will especially help the folks from Christenson Village.

Shaw Road Cycling - Town of Gibsons
SHAW ROAD ADVISORY BIKE LANES Surveying and layout is underway on Shaw Road for the advisory bike lanes. The Town is taking a phased approach to this project and will be doing all markings during the month of May with the exception of the dashed line for the advisory lane in the southbound direction. This will enable the community to get used to the new markings over the summer with only one bike lane in place. Sharrows will be marked for southbound cyclists. The southbound lane marking is planned for October. Weather permitting, the curbing changes at the corner of O'Shea and Shaw will be happening during the week of May 8 and line painting will happening during the week of May 22. The George - Town of Gibsons
GEORGE HOTEL & RESIDENCES - PROJECT UPDATE The Town of Gibsons and Klaus Fuerniss Enterprises have agreed on the terms of a Land Exchange Agreement. The agreement spells out the steps and conditions for the exchange of a portion of Winn Road, of approximately 10,000 square meters, for a new Town-owned public plaza of equal size. This plaza will be located between the two proposed buildings of the George Hotel and Residences and it will provide improved pedestrian access to the new waterfront walkway. The Waterfront Walkway in turn, once completed, will eliminate a missing pedestrian link along the Harbour shoreline, connecting Winegarden Park with the Gibsons Marina area. The Land Exchange Agreement contains a number of covenants and statutory right of ways to ensure that the public has unrestricted access over the new waterfront walkway and it gives the Town rights for access to its infrastructure assets. The developer is also required to construct and regularly maintain and repair the public plaza. There are several steps that the George Hotel project needs to complete before the actual land exchange can take place, however. A Road Closure Bylaw will be considered by Council in the near future. Moreover, three types of Development Permits require approval: Geotechnical Hazards, Environmentally Sensitive (habitat protection and site remediation) and Aquifer Protection, for which detailed design and peer reviews are still underway. The Town's main goal is ensuring that the Gibsons Aquifer is protected from the construction and existing site contamination. This process is taking longer than originally expected, due to the sensitive geotechnical and hydrogeological conditions of the site. The design and review process will continue until it has been demonstrated that the proposed project can proceed in a way that protects the Gibsons Aquifer. Contrary to some recent claims, The Town and the Ministry of the Environment (MoE) are in regular communication about the Ministry’s review and approval of the necessary permits to address the site’s contamination, in accordance with the applicable provincial regulations. More information on this project can be found here: www.gibsons.ca/the-george.
