Retired Racehorse Spotlight "I would love to share the story of one of my horses. His barn name is "Sox" and he raced under the name Imperial's Best. This photo is 6 months after he came off the track. He was doing a leadline class with my daughter who was 5 at the time. He never put a foot wrong. He is currently used for dressage and jumping and several students ride him. He has been used for a couple years in the riding program. I teach riding lessons and have several former Fort Erie horses in my program. More than half my school horses are off track thoroughbred. My students have also enjoyed great success with the new off track TB programs through the jockey club. One student is a thoroughbred incentive youth ambassador and another recently was awarded Jr TIP rider of the year. So glad you are recognizing off track TB's and how amazing they are." - Samantha McFadyen

Retired Racehorse Spotlight- Super Steal “On April Fool's day of this year, it will have been 21 years to-the-day since I purchased my first horse. I had received a call from a local farrier and horse trader who knew that after years of riding school horses, I was searching for a horse of my own. I had been looking for a flashy mare with lots of chrome who was any colour BUT a chestnut, and who was four years old or younger. The horse that walked off the trailer was an 8 year-old chestnut gelding with an ewe neck. I raised a skeptical eyebrow, but there was something about his friendly, cautious nature that kept me open-minded. Here we are, 21 years later. As I look out my living room window, I see that same chestnut, the oldest of my three horses, prancing around and taunting the mares with a saucy toss of his head. Many times over the past two decades, his stubbornness has made me cry- like all those times I chased him around for hours in an attempt to catch him. But there have been an equal number of times where his antics have made me laugh out loud. As "Murray" approaches his 30th birthday, I know I'm likely counting my time left with him in terms of months instead of years. He still gallops around the pasture and rears like a colt when he's excited...but those gallops don't last as long as they used to. And, it takes a little more effort for him to get up after his daily roll in the mud/ snow/ grass. He raced at Fort Erie Race Track for most of his four-year career. He had 39 starts and won only two races and less than $11,000. As I realize my future with him is limited, I'm becoming more curious about his past, and if anyone has any photos or recollections of this awkward horse with the less-than desirable conformation, dismal race record, and a tendency to be easily offended. I know my request is a long shot, but every once in a while, a long shot brings home the prize.” – Melissa Friedman. Photo by Danique Henderson
