PASSAGES: ELDER PAUL WILLIAMS REMEMBERED – WIKWEMIKONG TO REMEMBER THEIR OWN: A long-time resident, community activist and volunteer has passed away. Grand Council Chief Patrick Madahbee offers his condolences to friends and family in Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory on the passing of Elder Paul Williams, according to the Anishnawbek News. “Paul used to be on the recreation committee for the Huron Region. He organized all-Ontario events – baseball, hockey, golf. He also organized leadership training and workshops for the youth,” says Grand Chief Madahbee. “He was dedicated to youth over the years. Paul was on the Little NHL executive committee as the Little NHL Elder and instrumental in creating standards by making sure that managers and trainers were certified. He himself was a long-time hockey referee and baseball umpire. He developed accreditation for referees and umpires in the First Nations. Paul also organized provincial and regional championships. He will be greatly missed in the community.” Wiikwemkoong’s Ogimaa Duke Peltier says that Paul was always willing to step forward to ensure that sport and recreation opportunities were available to all in our community. “Earlier in my career, while living in Saskatchewan, I was coordinating the 1998 National Sport, Culture, and Recreation Conference and I had invited Paul to speak to the attendees about the importance of volunteering as officials. Recreational opportunities cannot happen without volunteers and officials. He was one of the distinguished guests brought in because of his experience as a referee. Paul was proud that he had advanced training at a NHL referee school.” Visitation will be at the Rabbit Island Community Centre on Thursday, May 11 at 5pm and funeral on Saturday, May 13 at 11am at the Holy Cross Mission in Wiikwemikoong.

CASH FOR COLLEGE OFFERS HELP FOR STUDENTS STARTING FALL PROGRAMS: On Monday, May 8, Cambrian College launched a new program that will REDUCE FINANCIAL BARRIERS FOR ELIGIBLE STUDENTS WHO ARE STARTING FALL SEMESTER PROGRAMS. The Cash for College program will offer 196 STUDENTS A $500 CREDIT to offset the cost of their education. “At Cambrian, we are always looking for ways to help our current and future students to overcome financial barriers that may prevent them from accessing postsecondary education,” said Renée Scott, Director of Student Success and Recruitment. “Our new Cash for College program will help eligible students who apply for the $500 fee credit by July 21. All they need to do is answer a short questionnaire to show financial need. If they qualify, the credit will be applied to their student account in time to offset fees that are due at the beginning of the school year,” Scott continued. Cambrian College set aside $98,000 to make this program possible for students who start fall programs in 2017. The investment in the Cash for College program is closely aligned with Cambrian’s strategic plan objectives, which include enhancing access to postsecondary education. GOING TO THE DOGS … IN A REALLY GOOD WAY: Everyone loves to take walks with their favourite four-legged friend … well, let’s take that one step further. Rachel Huard, the owner of PetValu in the Espanola Mall, says she is hoping to see plenty of people come out for a special Fido event. “I am pleased to announced PetValu’s involvement with Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides,” says Huard. “I am currently organizing a walk within our community where the members of our community would participate in a 30 – 40 minute walk and seek donations within our community. “Thanks to generous sponsors, 100% of the donations raised go directly towards providing Dog Guides to Canadians with Disabilities,” explains Huard. Held in more than 240 communities and in every province across Canada, the Walk has raised over $14 million, making it the largest fundraiser of its kind in Canada. The walk is SUNDAY MAY 28, 2017 STARTING AT PETVALU … participants will CROSS THE HIGHWAY AT THE MALL PARKING LOT USING THE LIGHTS AND WALK ALONG CENTRE STREET TO ESPANOLA RECREATION COMPLEX for a five-minute water break, then continue around the SOCCER FIELD TOWARDS MEAD STREET, WALK DOWN MEAD STREET TO QUEENSWAY AVENUE BACK TO CENTRE AND RETURN TO THE ESPANOLA MALL. She also intends to supply scoop bags for all participants on the walk to commit to the town’s cleanliness and by-laws and will have staff follow behind collecting all bags. Huard is also committing staff to re-walk this route to collect any missed accidents. As well, all dogs must follow an on leash policy during this walk.
