Faces of Soulfood: “I’m an old hippie, so back in that health food years of the ‘60s and ‘70s, good healthy eating was just making an outing. Then as an adult I was a nurse, so healthy eating was important. I was born and raised in Cape Breton, and lived in Fort McMurray for 25 years, until it was just time to change. I was ready to get out of there, so I said to my husband ‘I have to leave Fort McMurray will you come with me?’ Thank God he said, ‘yes’. It was really good to us, but it was time to go. I wanted to go to Southern Alberta or Southern B.C. so we took a couple weeks and looked around. We both really liked Cranbrook. I had put in different applications at different hospitals along the way, but Cranbrook was what I was really hoping for. And they called me. I specialized in psychiatry, but retired five years ago. I have grandchildren now -- one in Calgary and one in Edmonton. I really like retirement. People say, ‘what do you do’? But I do lots! I enjoy life. I read books, watch some television, see my family…I come to Soulfood! I remember the first time I was here I came with a friend who kind of knew Caitlin. Then a few months back I was out for a walk on Sunday morning and I was bemoaning the fact you couldn’t get a cup of coffee Sunday morning in downtown Cranbrook. I came down Baker Street and this woman was coming out of Soulfood with a to-go coffee. I said, ‘where did you get that?!’ And she said, ‘they’re open here’. There was music playing; I sat down and thought, ‘where have I been?!’ It was such a good vibe. Everyone was so nice. The food was great. So, I came back the next two Sundays and I decided to make a habit of it. It is so lovely -- families, food, little kids, music. I love the Elixirs. It’s all so nice. Perfect for the old hippie in me.” ~ Glenda (retired nurse, grandma, and self-proclaimed hippie.)

Faces of Soulfood: “We moved to Cranbrook because we were looking for a venture we could do as a family – property to buy or a motel to purchase, and George’s friend Andrew had told us the Ponderosa was for sale. We had been living in Creston at the time. The kids were very small. We had looked in Creston for something for several years. When this came up it seemed like just the right thing. George was travelling around North America working for Ritz Carlton, so it was nice to be able to put roots back down after having our second child. It was good timing. That was 2004. George grew up in Cranbrook; he’s worked in and for hotels his whole life. He’s known nothing else, professionally. We like that it’s an industry where people are on a holiday, so usually you see the best side of people, and if you exceed their expectation they’re over the moon. It can be a very happy place. I’m a forest tech by trade, so while George was galivanting around the U.S. installing computer operating systems for Ritz Carlton I was out in the bush doing timber cruising, block layout, selection for logging – that kind of stuff. Until the children came along. Kids are now 13 and 14. We’ve been doing this for 13 years. We have a busy life. The whole family is involved in the running of the business. The kids still strip rooms before they go to school and every three years we do an expansion to the property, so really you get one completed and start planning the next. We have 28 rooms and suites. As busy as it is owning your own business you get the benefit of still getting to spend time together as a family. We are on duty all day, every day, but at the same time we get to be together, and there are times during the day when it gets quiet and we get to enjoy that time. I go to Soulfood once or twice a week – they see me a lot. When I learned ‘this restaurant’ was opening in Cranbrook with a focus on local and organic, I was really excited. I’m celiac, so it’s already more complicated to eat most places, although many place in Cranbrook are very good about accommodating. As soon as Soulfood was up and running I went to try it out. They’re so good there. They have similar values to our family – for the last 16 years we’ve only ate local meat. We support local farmers and food producers; we try to know where our food comes from. That’s important to us, so to have this business (Soulfood) that is so genuinely excited about providing nourishing food and supporting other business who are focused on producing and offering real food, is awesome. I feel so good about going there, because I know I’m eating something with the same quality and care I would make at home, except I haven’t had to spend two hours shopping, washing, peeling, chopping, preparing. I just go there and sit down and there is this beautiful bowl of wonderfulness in front of me. It’s a small space but its calm, with relaxing music and good energy. I gravitate to that place.” ~ Rachel (and George), owners, Elizabeth Lake Lodge
