Melissa Boufounos, CHN
Description
Melissa Boufounos is a Certified Holistic Nutritionist & Personal Trainer with a background in ice hockey, ball hockey and obstacle course racing. Melissa Boufounos is a Certified Holistic Nutritionist specializing in sports nutrition. Through her passion for health and wellness, Melissa became aware of the connection between the food we eat and its impact on our health, and in the case of athletes, the way they perform.
After sustaining her sixth (diagnosed) concussion, Melissa decided to shift the focus of her practice towards helping others with mild Traumatic Brain Injury and Post Concussion Syndrome. While the awareness of mTBI and PCS is becoming more mainstream, the recovery process is still very much focused on rest, while there is a huge nutritional component left unspoken about.
By providing nutritional counselling to athletes, Melissa is able to share knowledge and personal experience with her clients when it comes to preventing and recovering from injuries and works with them to find real solutions to their health concerns.
Melissa is a competitive ice and ball hockey player. She has played at the national and international level for ball hockey. She is also an avid obstacle course racer and weight lifter. Melissa is currently taking time away from hockey due to PCS.
Melissa is also a Personal Trainer and has a diploma in Broadcast Journalism as well as Sports Journalism. She does freelance work for the Brampton Excelsiors (MSL) and Brampton Thunder (CWHL).

Whipped up this beef & broccoli from the 72-hour Sugar Free Challenge. So easy! The sauce was as simple as using a low sodium tamari & water then adding a bit of basil, sea salt and pepper. Served on a bed of organic red quinoa

Back from my trip to Florida! I think it may be the first trip "south" I've ever taken where I didn't come home with a tan...it was cold! I certainly stayed busy though, clocking over 10,000 steps 7 of the 8 days of my trip on my Fitbit. Most of the days were 14,000-18,000 steps!! Have a Fitbit? Add me! Nickname: Bouf
You know it's been a long morning when you've hit 4,000 steps on your Fitbit before 5:30am. Florida bound for a week of much needed R&R

Hungry for Change
"We are not eating food anymore; we are eating food-like products." - Hungry For Change.
If you've got a room in your house with enough space to jump around and move around in, you've got yourself a home gym. Fancy equipment is always a bonus, but your body is a fabulous workout tool. You don't NEED a gym membership to get in shape or stay in shape. You can also purchase small items for your home like agility ladders, Lebert Equalizer Bars and a stability ball that can all be stowed away in a closet and can be used for dozens of workouts! Stay tuned for a "fun" workout I will be putting my clients through tonight in their basement. #TrainerTip #HomeGym #ExerciseTips #LebertEqualizer #AgilityLadder #PersonalTrainer
This is a fabulous documentary I highly recommend everyone watches! I've seen it a few times and every time I watch it I am still mind blown by the statistics and research.
About Utah: The queen of concussions
I love that she mentioned dealing with vision was an important step! I still don't like that way too many specialists don't connect diet and supplementation to recovery. Concussions are one of those injuries that takes a team to heal, not just one doctor or specialist. #Concussions #mTBI #PCS

Hidden sugar is everywhere. As an athlete, it is important to watch sugar intake as it can lead to excess fat gain, especially in the love handles and upper back. Diets high in sugar also cause glycation, which can accumulate in the joints and cause cartilage destruction and damage resulting in joint pain. Even if you avoid the obvious high-sugar culprits, you could be consuming much more sugar than you realize. Consuming less than 5g of sugar per 100g of food is ideal. As an athlete, you have to be especially careful with hidden sugars in the workout and post workout drinks and bars you consume. Your health, body composition and performance will benefit from a reduction in hidden sugar. Sign-up here to receive my 72-hour Sugar Free Challenge. You'll get a 22 page PDF to download with valuable information, tips and 3 days worth of recipes! http://forms.aweber.com/form/05/1152988905.htm

The silent epidemic of concussions and head injuries - Chatelaine
...Doctors told me to simply stay at home and do nothing. “The best way to treat a concussion is generally through rest, counselling and a very gentle return to normal daily activities,” says Toronto neurosurgeon Dr. Michael Cusimano... ...Most of my ‘meals’ consisted largely of gummi bears and bananas... Those two points anger me to no end! One of BEST ways to treat a concussion is through sound nutrition and supplementation...eating nothing but sugary processed foods is completely contradictory to that, no wonder her symptoms took so long to go away! There is SO MUCH more you can do to help speed along recovery than just rest. If you or someone you know is suffering from a concussion contact me and set up a free 15 minute consultation to see if working with me is right for you. #Concussion #mTBI #PCS #PostConcussionSyndrome #Brain #Injury #AthleteNutrition
