Indonesia Disaffirms European Parliament’s Discriminative Decision on Palm Oil Based Biofuel’ The Government of Indonesia (GoI) expresses its utter disappointment on the European Parliament's (EP) move to endorse the phasing out of the use of palm oil based biofuel as renewable energy source by 2021. This discriminative decision is reflected on EP's vote on the draft of Directive on the Promotion of the Use of Energy from Renewable Sources, during the plenary session on 17 January 2018. GoI is well aware that the EP's vote is not the final decision. Nevertheless, such decision would set the tone for the EU consumers and political pressure for the EU Member States as well as other EU institutions on their stance upon palm oil as one of the renewable energy sources. It is highly unfortunate that as a respected institution, the EP jumped-not once but twice-into inconsiderate moves. The latest by taking as reference the Resolution on Palm Oil and Deforestation of Rainforests for its far-reaching and influential policy despite the latter's misguided conclusion in non-inclusive manner that appears to be biased against palm oil. The EP consistently turns their back on the reality that palm oil's efficiency and exceptionally high productivity has brighter potential to contribute to environmental conservation in the long run such as alleviating pressure on the global land bank compares to other vegetable oil, including ten times less land than European's rapeseed. Therefore, the move to phase out palm oil based biofuel as renewable energy source is seen as a protectionist trade policy rather than a genuine move on environmental conservation. The GoI has committed to secure and maintain economic, social, and environmental benefits of palm oil development through various policies and regulations. Palm oil industry in Indonesia is a well-proven avenue contributing to poverty alleviation, jobs creation and other major Sustainable Development Goals. The further process and final outcome of the RED II deliberation will undoubtedly affect the foundation of economic, trade and investment relations between Indonesia and the European Union which otherwise continuously growing based on mutual respect of respective interest.
