Today is Maundy Thursday, which gets its name from the Latin word mandatum, meaning command. On this day, Jesus took bread and broke it, took a cup and blessed it, and gave them to his disciples with the promise that this was his body and his blood. After supper he wrapped a towel around his waist and knelt to wash the disciples' feet. With this act, he also gave a new commandment (novum mandatum) to love one another just as he loved us. When we follow Jesus in such acts of love and service, we will be known as his disciples.
