End of Life Care Unfortunately old age and associated disability come all too soon with our pets. Whilst there are many medications and surgeries available to prolong life and ease discomfort there almost always comes a time where quality of life needs to be addressed. This is a very personal and emotional time for people who have had close companions, sometimes for many years. Quality of life is hard to measure, especially if you are emotionally involved. Interaction, mobility and ability to toilet and be clean are of utmost importance. Whilst everybody has their own personal views on euthanasia, I believe the welfare of the pet is the first consideration. Prolongation of life that serves only to cause distress to the owner and pet is, to me, a detraction from the many years of happiness that have been enjoyed. I am happy to provide guidance and advice on euthanasia and can provide that service in the privacy and intimate environment of the pets own home. A cremation service is also available for those who wish. If you need any guidance feel free to call me.

Arthritis is common in dogs, elbows hips and knees are the most commonly affected joints. There are a range of treatments available from food additive to help maintain joint health, to regulat injections to help grow new cartilage to long term pain relief medication. Depending on the cause there are also surgical options available. Signs of arthritis include limping, especially after vigorous exercise, stiffness and difficulty rising after periods of rest. Simple things to keep in mind to minimise the effects of arthritis include making sure your pet is not overweight, regular exercise but not over exercising (especially when less than 12 months of age ), avoid jumping down from heights

What Vaccination does my cat need? Cat flu is caused by 2 viruses and can be a severe debilitating disease. It is present throughout cat populations, signs vary from just a sneeze to severe eye and nasal discharge. Cats can become carriers and have breakouts( a bit like cold sores in people) if stressed. Vaccination with F3 helps with immunity to flu viruses. Panleukopaenia is also in the F3 vaccination this is a rare but often fatal disease that can cause diarrhoea & sudden death. FIV is the cat version of AIDS it is uncommon but there are areas of infection in stray & feral cats. There is no treatment available. It is spread by fighting & bite wounds. Vaccination requires 3 shots 2 weeks apart. If your cat is over 4 months a blood test is needed before vaccination to make sure he is not already infected. Chlamydia is in an F4 vaccination, again uncommon but can be contagious in animal shelters & catteries causes eye infections. Some cats are more likely to have vaccination reactions to F4 vaccinations. Standard protocols 8 weeks F3 or F4 & FIV, 10 weeks FIV, 12 weeks F3 or F4 & FIV, Yearly boosters are needed

Grass Seeds Grass seeds can cause severe problems they have been found in almost every possible position in dogs bodies. Ears: seeds can become lodged in ear canals causing significant irritation, head shaking and if left untreated cause ear infections & permanent injury. Usually needs sedation & removal. Eyes : Again sever irritation and rubbing at eyes, needs sedation and removal asap before corneal ulcers develop Nose: severe sneezing usually with some blood or snot , needs General anaesthetic & removal (can be difficult) Between toes: usually a small hole is present at the top of the toes with some discharge present, sometimes the seed is just under the skin and easy to find, other times has travelled up the leg and can be very difficult to find. Everywhere else! If your dog has a small sore that does not heal and intermittently discharges there is a chance that a seed is involved, can require general anaesthetic and extensive exploration to find the culprit.

What vaccination does my dog need? Distemper, Heptitis & Parvo are in a C3 vaccination these are severe fatal diseases and are the minimum standard. Kennel cough is added to form a C5 vaccination, it is like whooping cough in people a severe cough, and highly contagious but rarely fatal. If dogs are in any social situation (boarding, classes, or playing at the park) Kennel cough should be included. It is compulsory for shows, obedience, boarding kennels & racing dogs. Tetanus is rare in dogs and generally not vaccinated for unless high risk situations. There are no rabies vaccinations allowed in Australia unless travelling overseas. Standard protocols are 2 puppy shots at 7 and 12 weeks with annual or triannual boosters.
