Encounter Celebration Organisation Victor Harbor
Description
to celebrate the meeting between Matthew Flinders and Nicolas Baudin at Encounter Bay Victor Harbor on the 8th April 1802. The meeting between Capt. Matthew Flinders, a famous English Explorer, and Capt. Nicolas Baudin, a famous French explorer, is a Major event in Australian history.
Capt. Flinders was on board a vessel called "The Investigator" and Capt. Baudin was on board the vessel called "The Geographe.
When they crossed paths the exchange of data between the two completed a coastal Map including features of what we now know as Australia. Australia was then given it's Continent status.
The French were the first to produce a map in 1810 followed by Flinders when he published "A voyage to Terra Australia in 1814."
The naming of Australia resulted from the expedition. Matthew Flinders put forward and promoted the continent being named Australia on his return to England in 1812. The name was adopted by the British Government in the 1840's.
On the morning 9th April 1802 as the Investigator sailed South, Matthew Flinders named Encounter Bay in recognition of his meeting with Nicolas Baudin on 8th April 1802.
