The Society focuses on Local and Garden History of the region around Mount Lofty in the Adelaide Hills, South Australia The Mount Lofty Districts Historical Society is based in the beautiful Adelaide Hills of South Australia. The Society provides access to a wealth of information about the history of the area through its Archives in the Local and Garden History Centre in Stirling.
Uniquely, the History Centre brings together the history of local people and the remarkable gardens which influenced the development of this region.
The History Centre and Society office is located in the Coventry Library, an award-winning building and the hub of the local community, attracting more than 2000 visitors a day.
The History Centre opened in 2008 thanks to the help of an Australian Government grant under the Regional Partnerships Program, the Adelaide Hills Council and several generous benefactors. It features a public display and research area, with freely available research materials, and a large functional workroom and store room which houses the Society’s collection.
Volunteers are available to assist people with enquiries between 2pm and 4 pm on days the Library is open. So come and visit us, or make contact through facebook or email and learn more about this fascinating corner of South Australia and its remarkable history.

Thanks to a grant from History SA our new display is being set up in the Local and Garden History Centre of the Coventry Library. Over the next few weeks we will fine tune our setup and then you can expect to see news, events and items from our archives on display when you visit.
Here is another of our old maps, this time the area around Crafers, showing the subdivisions of Mount Lofty Park, Woodbury and Fern Hill. See if you can find any other interesting features.

It's interesting to look back at some of the old maps of the district and the names of subdivisions which are no longer used. Street names also change over time. In this example of part of Stirling you will see subdivisions called Woodbury, Crafers Park, Crossfell, Truwalla and Milford Estate. Let us know if you spot any other interesting features on the map. We will post other areas in the near future as well. #Stirling
Members and Friends Update Thanks to those who supported our "Writing Family History" event last night. We shared drinks, nibbles and insights from four speakers about their own experiences and suggestions about recording family history for personal and community benefit. Thanks to those from the local U3A family history group who contributed their time and effort. Our next major event will be the traditional fireside chat at Stangate House coming up in August; more information shortly. Lastly, the Flinders Column magazine issue 137 is now available for members to collect from the History Centre.
If it ever rains again, we might see the return of waterfalls like these, to the Mount Lofty Ranges. Who has memories of Waterfall Gully?
