Knowing the best of care is offered to our much loved patients is our reward at the end of a busy day. Stawell Veterinary Clinic is a busy mixed animal practice nestled on the outskirts of the beautiful Grampians National Park.

The practice is owned and run by husband and wife Richard and Gail with a friendly and dedicated team of veterinary surgeons and nursing staff.

Our case load ranges from much loved family pets, farm livestock, performance and pleasure horses to wildlife and even exotic animals. No two days are the same and there is always something interesting going on in our modern and fully equipped clinic.

Drs Lauren, Tahleah and Tanya all have their own areas of interest and knowledge allowing the clinic to offer a wide range of expertise.

Our nurses Jacinta, Tayla and Penelope are always there to welcome patients at the door. Their organisation and dedication means we have an extremely well run practice.

Knowing the best of care is offered to our much loved patients is our reward at the end of a busy day.

Merry Christmas to all our fabulous clients and their much loved pets. We will be open Saturday morning from 9 to midday for urgent cases and any last minute supplies. We will then reopen 8.30am Wednesday 28th. Ararat will be covering emergency calls over this period. However, you can send a message to our page, Richard will get back to with advice. That advice may be that you should seek emergency treatment at Ararat or we may be able to help you hold over until we reopen. If urgent do not hesitate to ring the clinic on 53581666 to get the contact details of the on call vet. Hopefully all clients and animals have a safe Christmas

This is Roxy. Roxy looks sad but she is one lucky dog. She has just gone home after recovering from parvo virus. Parvo is an often deadly virus that attacks the lining of the intestines causing vomiting and profuse bloody diarrhoea. There is no real cure for the virus and treatment involves intensive supportive care. Intravenous fluids, injectable antibiotics and antiemetics, and sometimes blood or plasma transfusions are used to save these critically ill puppies. Fortunately Parvo is easily prevented by vaccinating your dogs. There has been a significant parvo outbreak recently in Ararat and we have now seen 2 recent cases. Parvo virus can live in the ground for at least 12 months so spread of the virus can be quick and far reaching. Please check that your dog's vaccination is up to date. We much prefer to give a healthy dog a thorough examination, vaccination and possibly even a cuddle, rather than caring for and cleaning up after a severely sick parvo pup.

This little stray cat was hit by a car yesterday on Sloane Street. He is staying at the vet clinic temporarily while he heals but will be passed on to the Northern Grampians local laws department once deemed well enough. We would like to point out that through Adoptable Pet Rescue's cat desexing program this little cat could have been desexed and microchipped for $7. If he had been implanted with a microchip it would allow for a swift reunion with his owners. He also would have been less likely to be out wandering had he been desexed. The desexing program is still running so contact the clinic or adoptable pet rescue to apply.

Gail is excited with the arrival her brand new foal. Mum and Bub are doing well and Gail might get some sleep now. Gail's last foal from Elphaba was born with a serious deformity in the abdomen wall and required 2 surgeries in 2 days and unfortunately did not make it through. So grateful that this little girl is as bright as a button and already giving her strong willed mum a run for her money.

We would like to remind all of our followers that as the days start to lengthen our feline friends are starting to cycle. We have had a number of pregnant cats come though the clinic already. There is a free desexing program available through the clinic thanks to a grant obtained by Adoptable Pet Rescue so if you have a pension card call up and book your cat in before it falls pregnant to the local stray

Dr Kathryn was off to the Australian small animal veterinary association conference last week. She learnt heaps and it was great for her to network with colleagues from all over the world. The last evening was time to let her hair down at the annual dinner. Do you think she would have been a hit on the dance floor?

Most people say "but I know how to train my dog" when we recommend attending puppy classes. One of South Australia's leading behavioural veterinary clinic trainers is attending both puppy and obedience classes with her pup. That's because these classes provide opportunities to teach your puppy about how to behave around other people, dogs and in different environments which you cannot possibly hope to provide in a safe and consistent manner from home. Set your puppy up to succeed. One of the leading reason dogs get euthanised or abandoned is due to behavioural issues.
