Encouraging ideas
This week at SEDA we were lucky enough to have as our guest lecturer Gary McDarby, Hobart Enterprize chief executive, who spoke about the many innovative ways that technology can be used to tackle educational disadvantage. It was fascinating for students hear about Gary's involvement in ICT projects that engage with disadvantaged youth, such as the Computer Clubhouse in Ireland. We encourage students to find out more about Gary's work closer to home, in particular check out Enterprize Hobart and Enterprize Launceston to see what's currently happening in Tasmania's start-up community!
How to Embrace AI for Enacting Humanitarian Change
A great article on how Artificial Intelligence (AI) may be able to improve empathy as well as intelligence to create positive social change. Also check out the four steps for social entrepreneurs working in this space!
Fashion label Magpie Goose showcases traditional Top End Aboriginal prints
The new socially inclusive enterprise and fashion label Magpie Goose has definitely created a unique and eye-catching clothing range! Importantly, this organisation is also creating work opportunities for local indigenous artists and designers in the Tiwi Islands. Felicity Wright, Injalak Art Centre manager, highlights why it's about much more than just clothing design and manufacturing: "Every time you're increasing awareness, understanding, respect for Aboriginal design, you're increasing respect for Aboriginal culture."

Check out the winning social entrepreneurs from around the globe who have been recognised for creating systems-level social change.
'We are all entrepreneurs': Muhammad Yunus on changing the world, one microloan at a time
"There are two kinds of businesses in the world. One is a business which makes money, and the other solves the problems of the world." Muhammad Yunus, founder of the grassroots Grameen Bank, believes that in this current era characterised by globalisation and technological revolution, young people in particular should learn about and harness the huge potential of social entrepreneurship.
Disobedience as a necessity for success, especially for social innovation
It's well recognised that risk is fundamental to social innovation, but to what extent is disobedience an important ingredient in the mix? This article offers an interesting take on this question, plus some great social innovation case studies worth checking out.
Hamlet Hobart
We loved our visit to Hamlet Hobart to interview their co-founder, Emily Briffa, and are excited to share Emily's story with our SEDA students at UTAS! Social enterprises in Tasmania, like Hamlet, can foster important social impact within our local communities, for example by addressing barriers to employment and enhancing social inclusion. They can also give us tasty ciabatta bread to eat!
Why you should take a senior on a bike ride
Thanks to the amazing story of Cycling Without Age, we now all feel like jumping on a 'trishaw' and going for a joy ride with some inspiring seniors! A great example of how a simple idea and a passionate social entrepreneur can turn a mere thought bubble into a thriving initiative that now operates in 29 countries.
Latino Community Credit Union
In our classes this week at SEDA, we've looked at how the Latino Community Credit Union works to fulfill both a financial and social mission. The LCCU's new Immigration Assistance Loan is a fantastic example of a highly tailored product that meets the needs of the LCCU's members and community.
Ecosia
We think Ecosia - the search engine that plants trees - is a fantastic example of a technology inspired social innovation. It turns a mundane, everyday process like searching online into a small but significant opportunity for environmentally and socially conscious action.
