I had a Philippino couple in the car the other day - they had been shopping and bought LOTS of Christmas presents. When I asked what the gifts were they said "shoes". They were sending lots of shoes as gifts to their loved ones at home in the Philippines. I was surprised, because decent shoes here are not exactly cheap. But apparently shoes are taxed extremely highly there (not sure if that has anything to do with Imelda Marcos, though!). It's always good to remember how good we have it in this country of ours and it's really important to not fuck it up. Yes, that means you, politicians.
