1001 Books achieved! This morning we had the pleasure of Cheston Freer and his mum Sarah visiting us to receive his award for being the first young reader to reach 1001 books before school! I’m sure you’ll agree that reading 1001 books before school is no small feat and Cheston was awarded a certificate from the 1001 books before school organiser Larryn. He also received a voucher from Megs Bookshop from Margie Arnold who stayed on to personally read a short story to Cheston. Congratulations Cheston on a magnificent effort! The 1001 Books before school is an initiative that will be ongoing throughout this year and aims to support the early literacy development of children and to encourage a love of reading between parents and their children. You can register your children to be part of the initiative at either the Port Pirie Regional Library or the Crystal Brook Library. There are 80 other children currently working towards the same goal and we look forward to seeing them join Cheston at the top of the ladder :)

Flashback Friday Wheelbarrow overflowing with dead mice. Caption reads: '4th, 5th night's catch at [?] stack Crystal Brook S.A.' The 'Advertiser', 23 June 1917, pg. 10, has the following information: 'Mr F.G. England, who is conducting operations under the Harvest Board, began work on the local [wheat] stacks on Wednesday with his double-fence trap. On the first night of operations with only part of the stack fenced, Mr England succeeded in bagging 15,400, and this morning, with the stack fenced all round, 60,000 were caught. The two catches aggregate over a ton and a quarter. There are still a large number of stacks to be dealt with'. This photograph (PRG 5/15/50/6) is courtesy of the State Library of South Australia

Media Monday Ways to deal with dirty books Great demonstration from the Boston Public Library by using the DePulvera Book cleaning machine. Are we likely to get one of these? Not in our lifetime. We’re happy with the elbow grease method, but it’s a great idea all the same. :)
