Wonderful news! Yesterday we learnt that the Government will officially retain the Child Dental Benefits Scheme. This will continue to allow many Australia children who would otherwise not always have access to dental treatment, to come to the dentist for a range of preventative and restorative treatments such as check-ups, scale & polishes, fissure sealants and fillings. These treatments all contribute to improving a child's oral health and are essential to retaining adult teeth as they erupt. A big thank you to all dental professionals & patients who contributed to the lobbying of the retention of the scheme. What a great present leading up to the holidays! From all of us here at Padstow Ideal Dental, we can't wait to see all our wonderful CDBS patients again in 2017!! :)

Not long to go now until the holidays!! :) Our practice will be closing over the holiday season, with our last day being Friday 23rd December, and our first day back in the New Year will be Monday 9th January. This Saturday will be our last for the year. Whilst the Government has still not made it entirely clear whether they will be renewing/continuing the Child Dental Benefits Scheme in 2017, many of the current vouchers do expire with the conclusion of 2016 - so if your children have a voucher be sure to book them in before the end of the year! We have a few appointments available before the end of the year, if you'd like to book in give us a call on 9773 7600 :)

Earlier this week 2 of my patients Mia & Ella came in to show me their progress on their brushing charts. The girls were given these charts to help monitor their twice daily brushing, and for the girls to record a time spent brushing to make sure that they brushed for at least 2 minutes every morning and every night time. So far so good!! Keep up the great work girls! :) -Mel :)

For those of you who feel you are not getting the most out of your private health fund, with rising premiums and low rebates, the Time2Switch Campaign may interest you. This campaign was created by the Australian Dental Association to encourage reform and regulation of private health funds, to alleviate some of the confusion surrounding the near 20,000 policies available on the market. We encourage our patients who are interested to sign the online letter to the Commonwealth Ombudsman by following the link below. https://www.ada.org.au/time2switch/Make-a-Complaint The aim of the Time2Switch campaign is to create a more workable balance between the profession, our patients and the health funds. It is envisaged that this will be achieved by encouraging dental professionals and patients to lodge complaints with the Private Health Insurance Ombudsman, and by persuading patients to complain about and compare their existing policies, with the intention of intiating reform in the private health insurance sphere.

Flossing Techniques - Flossing Teeth Effectively
Here is a short, accurate demonstration of how to effectively floss your teeth. You should aim to floss 1x daily (I find the best time is before brushing at night time, when you're not in a rush like in the morning) before brushing your teeth. The one thing I want everyone to know is we need to glide the floss into the gum slightly to clean out this space underneath the gums! This is a crucial step to ensure you're removing the plaque and bacteria from around your gums. You may experience some bleeding when you first correct your flossing technique, this is caused by the plaque which infects the surrounding gums making them inflammed and causing them to bleed easily. Don't be alarmed, continue to floss and clear the plaque to improve the health of the gums and stop the bleeding. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your bleeding gums, give us a call on 9773 7600 and come in to see me. Healthy gums shouldn't bleed so if you have ongoing bleeding you need to discuss this with either Peter or myself. Happy Flossing! Mel :)

After months of waiting, our hygienist Mel is finally flying out to West Timor this Thursday for her 2nd volunteer dental trip. In September 2015 Mel went on her first trip, and she's wanted to go back ever since! The trips are supported by a number of different organisations, and send over about 13 people each year for a 10 day visit. The team is made up of several dentists, dental hygienists, and hygiene students. Between them they are able to provide oral hygiene instruction, scaling (cleans), and extractions for men, women and children living in remote communities who are otherwise unable to access any dental treatment. To put things into perspective during the 2015 trip, the team managed to see 895 patients across 4 remote villages, 2 orphanages and 1 school. During this time a mind-blowing total of 363 teeth were extracted! Attached below is a collage of some of Mel's photos from last year, and we're looking forward to seeing more in the coming weeks! While Mel is away we have a few familiar faces popping in to fill in for her, including our Saturday hygienist Vano, and even Sarah-Jane who has been on leave this year. Mel will be back on Monday 26th of September to share her stories :) Safe travels Mel!

As the days get warmer we're starting to reach for the cold water, snacks and occasional sneaky ice block to cool us down - but be warned! These refreshing treats are the perfect culprit to cause the tooth sensitivity we dread. To avoid the discomfort this summer and enjoy your ice block in peace, give this post from earlier this year a read to best prevent tooth sensitivity!
