The weatherman is forecasting a few balmy evenings for Mount Gambier in the lead up to Christmas 2016. Come experience the spectacular sound and light show at the Cave Gardens in the heart of our beautiful city. The light and sound show runs nightly (9.00pm and 9.15pm) in the Cave Garden. Colour washes of light emanate from the cave, with shadowlike images of ancient megafauna creatures from the local area projected onto and moving across the rock face accompanied by an ethereal and mystical soundscape. Yesterday was a historic milestone for South Australia with the arrival of the first direct commercial flight from China into our capital. Thanks to all of those who made it possible. It certainly opens up new gateways and opportunities for many local businesses and for tourists to enjoy the natural beauty, splendour and produce our state has on offer.

This time of year, Mount Gambier’s Blue Lake takes on a vibrant cobalt blue. The colour is unique in the world and visitors flock to the lake during summer to see and enjoy the beauty and splendour of this ancient crater lake. The crater formed some 6,000 years ago due to volcanic activity in the region and later became water filled. A paved walking trail encircles the lake and takes about an hour to complete with 6 viewing platforms to stop and take in the views. The recent addition of solar lights, now also allows for night walks. Local tour operator Aquifer Tours provides daily tours to the surface of the lake. This is a unique experience in which a glass paneled lift takes you down a dolomite shaft to about 10 metres above the lake’s surface, where you can find out why the lake turns blue in summer. Other features of interest around the famous Blue Lake are the Rook Lookout and wall that was built in a single day by town’s residents in 1918 and the Gordon monument. The monument marks the point where in 1864 famous Australian poet, horseman and politician Adam Lindsay Gordon made his daring leap onto a narrow ledge, 2.4 meter below the road surface on his horse Red Lancer. Come experience and learn all these interesting facts along the shores of the Blue Lake when you visit Mount Gambier.
