An architect by trade, Fred joined Baptcare this year to help deliver new construction projects, such as the new Residential Aged Care Facility at our Strathalan Community. “Relocating from Perth to join Baptcare in Melbourne was a big decision for me. Ultimately, it was a unique opportunity for me to be a part of a community-centred organisation that is both a provider of much needed care in the community and a developer. We have to build the best products to enable our staff to care for our residents at the highest standard. This is distinct from Commercial Residential developments where profit is often the sole driver.” Find out more about our development projects: http://www.baptcare.org.au/why-baptcare/community-projects/baptcare-development-projects

A new model of support: NDIS - A day in the life of a local area coordinator

As a DHHS Local Area Coordinator, Cassie supports people with disability to set goals and work towards achieving them. One of her highlights this year was helping her client Sasha find somewhere to live independently. “I’m passionate about assisting our clients to achieve their goals, make changes and lead a fulfilling life. It’s incredible to see what positive outcomes can be achieved and how it can change a person’s life. I enjoy the creative problem-solving and the everyday variety of this role as well as being able to make a difference in the lives of others.” Find out more about Cassie and our work in the NDIS space.

As a volunteer with our Pastoral Care program, Val visits a number of older women living alone at home. A lot of these women have mobility issues and don’t have many other people in their lives, and the impact a chat and a cup of tea can have is immeasurable. “I’d encourage people to get involved with volunteering because it’s very rewarding. Just seeing the joy on their faces, being able to brighten their day, you get as much blessing for yourself as you give them.” Find out more about volunteering at Baptcare: http://www.baptcare.org.au/get-involved/volunteer/volunteering-for-baptcare

Marion loves her independence but living by herself was starting to get difficult at 101 years of age. She moved into our Karana community last year, where she has had support from the care staff and Chaplain to adjust to her new home. “Everybody has been so helpful, they have made it very easy to make the change over.” Find out more about our residential aged care communities: http://www.baptcare.org.au/services/aged-care-homes/residential-aged-care-homes

1800 Respect

There is a disturbing increase in the number of women experiencing technology facilitated abuse via text message, email and social media. While these new technologies can provide a very valuable, flexible link to friends, family and support services for women experiencing domestic or family violence, they can also become a tool for an abuser to harass, control, monitor and humiliate an intimate partner or ex-partner. To support women experiencing the effects of sexual assault, domestic or family violence 1800RESPECT has developed a series of web-based resources including a digital Escape Bag Checklist and five Technology and Safety videos.

Our Orana Social Centre clients had an exciting outing recently, as they visited the Maxfield Standardbreds Tasmania. stables. Our clients were able to watch the horses train and enjoyed listening to hilarious stories from Mick, the stable owner. The group was also given the opportunity to get up close and feed the horses. One of our clients in particular, who is visually impaired, enjoyed getting up close and patting the horses. Throughout the visit there was a presence of calm as our clients enjoyed the fresh air, sunshine and hands on experience. Many thanks to Maxfield Standardbreds Stables for volunteering their time and allowing the group to have this experience. They all look forward to returning again. Sanctuary Resident Shines in New Job

One of Baptcare’s Sanctuary residents, Abdul, 20, recounts the hardships he has overcome whilst seeking asylum in Australia, culminating in a job offer with a leading employer. Baptcare helped Abdul gain work experience in his field by offering him voluntary work placement at the Moonee Ponds office. This experience plus his other work allowed him to shine in a corporate environment. His hard work paid off when the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre recently referred Abdul to a job at ANZ Bank’s inbound call centre. ASRC Foodbank Entrepreneurs' Program at ASRC

Christmas and the holiday season can be a time of reflection for many people. Among the questions people ask themselves at this time are, “What can we do to help people who haven’t been as fortunate as us”. If you would like to help a child in need, foster care is a great way to do it. In particular, the stability of a longer term placement can make a profound difference at a vulnerable time in a young person’s life.
