While some people worry about Australia's relationship with the new US President, our Coast Guard volunteers continue to enjoy a great relationship with their colleagues in the US Coast Guard Auxiliary.

Almost all the deaths in Queensland waters last year involved people who were NOT wearing life jackets. Please remember the rules. You MUST have an appropriate life jacket for every person on board. The location of your life jackets MUST be clearly marked. And children under 12 MUST wear a life jacket when underway in an open boat smaller than 4.8 metres.

Since its last annual intake of new volunteers in December, Brisbane Coast Guard has received numerous enquiries from people interested in joining the Manly-based Flotilla. As a result, local Flotilla Training Officer Allan Tennent has organised a new intake for mid-year 2017. Details are in this newspaper story.

Our thanks to Andrew Basevi, Managing Director of OZLED (The LED Lighting Specialists) at 218 Leitchs Road, Brendale in Brisbane. When our only truck recently lost its roof-top Light Bar, Andrew stepped forward and donated a new 'Skyfire' Lightbar, specially configured for Coast Guard work. Andrew already supplies lighting gear to every ambulance in the state, and to several Coast Guard rescue vessels; and his support for Brisbane Coast Guard is greatly appreciated. Happy New Year to Andrew and all his team at OZLED.

Brisbane Coast Guard volunteers will be on duty throughout the Christmas-New Year public holidays, in case you run into trouble at sea. Our new recruits will be there with our old hands, to give YOU a hand if you need one. Remember to LOG ON with us or with Marine Radio Manly before going out on the water, so we know where to come looking for you if something goes wrong.

Brisbane Coast Guard received a call at 7:00am this morning, from a solo fisherman suffering a suspected heart attack. Our volunteers raced over to St Helena to collect him and bring him back to Manly, where Ambulance Officers were waiting to help him. We also brought his boat back for him. Luckily, he was a Marine Assist member, so this rapid medivac and vessel recovery was provided gratis by our team.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2017 to all our friends and supporters. Thank you to our sponsors and all those who gave us grants and provided the equipment we needed to help save lives and keep our boats running in 2016.

Seven of our volunteers launched two of our boats last night, for a Search & Rescue operation. The 'target' - a couple of kayakers who paddled off during the morning and hadn't returned by nightfall. Of course, they were fine ... just hadn't bothered to stay in touch with their family - who called the police, who activated Coast Guard, who launched boats and sent volunteers out into the night searching. We recommend that young kayakers take mobile phones with them in future, so they can let their friends know when they decide to stay out late!
