Babbarra Women's Centre 2016
"The women I see here... they are quite shy, but in their workplace they are very powerful and they are talented"- Helen Williams, founder of Babbarra Women's Centre, speaks about the strong, talented women of Babbarra in this excerpt from a short film created by our friends at Grow the Music.

Lucy Yarawonga - proudly wearing her latest t-shirt screen design. Lucy made this design last week in Maningrida. Depicting her mother's country dreaming story, Lucy first sketched the drawing onto paper, then transferred it onto clear acetate with black paint. Next she exposed this painting onto a silk-screen coated with light sensitive emulsion, and finally printed with the screen using ink onto this t-shirt. A complex process, screen printing does return great artistic results. Thanks again to Bobbie Ruben for supporting this workshop.

Meet Carol: Carol is from Buluhkaduru, a homeland in the Maningrida region. Carol works hard at her small outstation women’s centre, producing hand made textiles- such as the blue and yellow ‘manme’ (bush food) design she holds in these photos. Carol bought her fabric in last week, and our Maningrida based sewing team made this lovely skirt and top outfit. Babbarra Women's Centre tries to support women living on homelands as well as women in Maningrida. If you had any interest in learning more or supporting women’s homeland centres, please get in touch.
