Bujinkan Tasmania Dojo 徳武流水武神館武道道場

Many people ask about the practicality of martial arts for self defence. I've come to believe that we do not adapt our art to real fighting ... we apply it. But one cannot apply something if one has not learned it. Here Duncan Stewart applies his taijutsu to a few scenarios ... freely, with control ... to me, the statement is clear ...

Best wishes to everyone for xmas and the new year. Many thanks to all who have contributed to this year's training, and I'm already looking forward to next year. Likely start date for 2017 is Saturday 14 January - I'll confirm this through FB closer to the date. There are lots of themes to our training sessions. One thing I would like to include in 2017 is extended study of a specific school, namely togakure ryu. Despite earlier hype by Stephen Hayes and others about being 'ninja' - and some who dispute the credibility of the ryu - I believe it is authentic and has a lot to offer. Anyway, more about that through next year. Take care over the holidays, enjoy family and friends, and see you in January. Rick

Harry Mitrou shihan - response to low attack

This is a short clip of Harry Mitrou shihan teaching in Sydney in early 2016. It was a delight to receive instruction from Harry who is a highly skilled and generous exponent of taijutsu. This particular demonstration is evidence of why training in the Bujinkan includes ukemi (ways of minimising damage when receiving an attack) ... you just never know what's going to happen ...

William Fairbairn - WW2 Gutterfighting films

William Fairbairn was a legendary figure in Western martial arts. He was highly skilled in jujutsu, Chinese boxing and many other styles, but he excelled at distilling things down to what is most likely to work under real pressure. This clip shows bits of two films made during WW2 - 'The Fighting Knife' and 'Unarmed'. The knife film is the only known footage of Fairbairn showing his knife techniques. The DVD is a must-have for history buffs and serious martial artists. For more background to the films and info on how to order go to www.gutterfightingfilms.com

Hello all This is where I will be posting an occasional comment on what we cover at training, plus a few resources and links to things I believe might be helpful We have been working on dealing with asymmetrical situations - using naginata against katana, wakizashi, tanto and eventually unarmed [that's pretty asymmetrical] We've drawn on all the foundational kamae - shizen, ichimonji, ihen, hicho, jumonji These kamae [postures] are so important I put them into a small drill - I've attached the drill as a PDF ... let me know if you find it helpful Cheers Rick ps: Will get back to you with the PDF ... once I learn how to put it up!
