This time last week I was headed to the beautiful Yarra Valley Living Centre to attend an Essence of Health Retreat, led by Dr Craig Hassed of Monash University. Two things on which the retreat focused were mindfulness and nutrition. For mindfulness it covered how mindfulness practice (a form of meditation) has been shown to assist in the management and prevention of chronic health conditions and in general wellbeing. Most of us today would say we lead stressful lives and we know that prolonged stress leads to ‘wear and tear’ on the body. Technology can give us too much constant input, making it difficult to stay organised, set priorities and manage time. It effectively clutters our mind and mindfulness gives us a break from all of this. The Retreat also gave information and evidence on how applying Mindfulness techniques can help manage pain, lower cortisol and the wear and tear on the body, improve immunity and facilitate lifestyle changes such as weight loss. Another contributing factor of course is what we eat, and plant based diets high in fruit and vegetables, fibre and omega 3 fatty acids are also shown to have great benefit with many health conditions. There are many free apps for mindfulness and great ones to get you started are Calm, Stop Breathe & Think and Smiling mind (which includes practices for children).
