Meet Eric - he's smart, he's dedicated, and he's ready to teach you all the secrets on how to excel in Mathematics and Biology in your HSC. Come along to #UpliftOweek and #MeetTheTutors. 1. What is your ultimate study secret? “Everybody has different ways to study that works best for them. However, my ultimate study secret is something that can be applied to everybody. The secret is to continually revise over the materials and make small notes every week (with no distracting sounds in the environment). By doing this, you work out any issues that you have in the content straight away (and get those issues fixed) and you create notes that make sense to you. When the exams come, you wouldn't need to cram all night long for the test because you would have studied every week for it.” 2. What is your most memorable moment at Uplift? “My most memorable memory was in 2015 when I had a group of students who were initially worried about their marks due to their school teacher being absent/too hard to comprehend. However, through several terms of tutoring, quizzes and questions being asked in and outside of the classroom, these students were able to score over 90s in the CSSA trial papers (catholic papers used across the state). When I asked them how they achieved their score, they responded with, “you should be proud Eric because you are like our real teacher.” 3. Tell us about one of the items on your bucket list. “One of the items on my bucket list is to work overseas and enjoy the new friends and culture. In particular, I'd love to live in France.” 4. What are some of your proudest achievements? “One of my proudest achievements would be being admitted into the University of Sydney's talented students program. In this program, I was given the opportunity to join a select few students to learn the latest events in the Science community. I was even able to work on colon cancer research during this program. Another achievement that I am extremely proud of would be completing my Honours year in Biochemistry/Immunology and achieving First class. I learnt so much during this time and I am extremely grateful for the skills I learnt during the year.” 5. What is your favourite quote of all time? “Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.” https://www.facebook.com/events/982916441747638/

In Part 2 of #MeetTheTutors, we sit down for a chat with Brendan. He'll be teaching the Year 11 and 12 Chemistry free trial classes during #UpliftOWeek. 1. What is life like beyond the HSC? “It's wonderful. You get to study what you love (no more HSC English!!) and because of that you are more motivated and encouraged to do well!” 2. What are some of your proudest achievements? “One of my proudest achievements is state ranking in Senior Science in the HSC. I'm also really proud of being able to study an amazing profession in physiotherapy and luckily, I've been able to do really well in the course, winning an award for presenting my final paper to graduate!” 3. What do you love about your job? “I was never the brightest kid in high school but I had some great teachers and tutors that guided and encouraged me through the HSC and many have become life long role models and mentors. I love being able to do that for my students and that's why I keep coming back every week!” 4. What is your most memorable moment at Uplift? “There have been heaps of memorable moments I've shared with students over my past 4 years of teaching. The most memorable moment I've had would have to be seeing my students from 2013 achieve the top ranks in their schools for chemistry. It was such a humbling and gratifying feeling seeing the students get rewarded for all their hard work.” 5. What makes Uplift different from other tutoring centres? “I find that the tutors at Uplift really go above and beyond to teach and mentor our students. We don't just teach the syllabus content (which we do really well) but we also teach life and study skills that really help our student through the HSC and at university.” 6. Tell us about one of the items on your bucket list. “I would love to go skiing in Japan or Canada! I went skiing for the first time last year and it was such an amazing experience!” https://www.facebook.com/events/982916441747638/

We sat down and caught up with some of the tutors who will be presenting seminars and running free trial classes during O-Week and asked them a few questions about their experiences, aspirations and outlooks on life. In Part 1 of #MeetTheTutors we would like to introduce you to the lovely Nikkida, head of Year 7 to 10 English. 1. WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT TEACHING? “When my students and their parents tell me the results they receive at school, I couldn't be happier than in those moments. I love hearing when someone has drastically improved over the course of the year or when they're able to show off the interesting and obscure English techniques they know to their teachers, like one of my favourites - stichomythia! It's when I hear my students love my teaching style and find it easy to understand otherwise difficult concepts that makes me so happy to get up early on weekends.” 2. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR PROUDEST ACHIEVEMENTS? “Coming 1st in the HSC trials for Advanced English felt really great, as well as getting into my dream course (B Psychological Science) at uni. I'm also really happy with my latest semester - keeping up my Distinction average!” 3. WHAT IS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT AT UPLIFT? “My most memorable moment would be a week or two before the end of 2014 when my Year 7 class told me their marks for the year - they all came within top 10 at their schools!” 4. WHAT IS YOUR ULTIMATE STUDY SECRET? “One thing I learned in psychology is something called context learning - you're more likely to retain and recall information in a similar environment in which you learned it. Therefore, try to study in a place that has the same feel as an exam room (clean table and no distractions!) to remember the most information!” 5. WHAT'S YOUR SECRET TALENT THAT NOT MANY PEOPLE KNOW ABOUT? “I'm a pretty great beatboxer - but you can judge for yourselves if I decide to show you when you ask :P” 6. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE MOTIVATIONAL QUOTE OF ALL TIME? "Let me live, love, and say it well in good sentences." - Sylvia Plath #UpliftOweek #HSC #Free #Seminars #FreeTrial #Tutoring #Education
