Western Desert Nganampa Walytja Palyantjaku Tjutaku Aboriginal Corporation (Western Desert Dialysis) was named one of the big winners at the Indigenous Governance Awards in Sydney last night. Western Desert Dialysis looks after Aboriginal renal patients in central Australia and runs the Purple House and the Purple Bus. “It’s their humanity that stands out in their governance,” Awards chair Professor Mick Dodson said. “They strike me as a family that really cares for every member of that family in the way they deliver services. Aboriginal culture has been wrapped around access to modern medicine and allows it to be administered in a holistic and culturally appropriate way.” Murdi Paaki Regional Assembly was honoured as the winner for non-incorporated projects. “Murdi Paaki’s success Comes from the fact they’re made up of community members, which gives them power to advocate,” Prof Dodson said. “They show leadership, vision, and fearlessness, and they are practising self-determination.” Highly commended honours were awarded to Kanyirninpa Jukurrpa, for its work strengthening Martu people’s connection with country and leadership capacity; and Ara Irititja, for its dedication to digitally archiving culturally significant materials from the APY Lands. Pictured is William Johnson of Murdi Paaki, photographed by Wayne Quilliam.

Isaiah Firebrace, a young Yorta Yorta man from Moama has won the X Factor competition. The seventeen-year-old told the Koori Mail he's been singing for as long as he can remember. Isaiah's debut single 'It's Gotta Be You', which he performed on the show will be featured on a self-titled album of studio tracks and live performances. Isaiah said the win means the world to him. "Winning the X Factor is a dream come true," he said. "After appearing on the show last year and forgetting my lyrics I was too scared to even audition again. "Luckily I had really supportive people around me who encouraged me to forget about the year before and just have another go and I'm so glad I did." Isaiah's debut album is due for release on December 9. You can listen to Isaiah's song here http://smarturl.it/ISAIAHIGBYR

Love is at the base of Archie Roach’s new album, Let Love Rule, released today. “On this album I wanted to explore the theme of love – what it is, what it means,” he said. “I wanted to write about love, or a willingness to love all people.” He was concerned by what he saw happening in the world and particularly in Australia. “We are closing ourselves off and not letting people in,” Roach said. “And not just in the sense of not letting them into the country, but not letting them into our hearts, into our minds. “This country was built on people coming here from other countries. That’s what made Australia what it is today.” This beautiful photo of Uncle Archie was taken by photographer Wayne Quilliam.
