Replacing hinges due to lack of maintenance is common. The small hole in the socket of common gate hinges is to insert the tip of a oil can. A few drops a year can save you money. Whilst replacing these hinges I found that due to bad design the gate was full of water. Once I added drain holes the gates were much lighter and now work perfectly.

Don't get caught out! Choose a professional. The particular motor featured in this show was marketed in Australia as a B&D Controll A Door 4. It is a rebranded liftmaster motor that was made in Mexico and rebranded around the world under different names. I installed roughly 50 of these about 10 years ago and have repaired many, including rebuilding the helical gearbox. I have never had to replace a control board due to a power surge. The design of the control board has a Varistor across the mains input, which is there for surge protection. They are a very reliable motor even though they are an old design and are quite noisy. I thought this was an interesting video on how some technicians are only out there to rip people off. The garage door part of the documentary starts at 28:00 https://youtu.be/Q7_9131Ea8E?t=28m

Recently completed installation. This one is the hamburger with the lot! Keypad, remote control, mobile phone entry with free exit by loop detector in the driveway. Safety beams are fitted internally and externally to prevent closure on a vehicle. Electric lock is fitted to take the strain off the motors when the gates are closed. This is a FAAC 415L system. The gates were galvanised and painted because they are close to the beach. This ensures long life and ability to repaint periodically rather than powdercoating which can flake off in a corrosive environment.

http://www.dhfonline.org.uk/news.aspx?NewsArticleId=150 Don't let this happen to you. All automatic systems we install have anti crush clutches installed, be it mechanical or electronic. These are calibrated depending on the gate size etc. It is worthwhile checking if your gates will stop or reverse on impact of an obstacle. If you are in doubt call Gippsland Gate and Garage Door Systems. Your local professional.

Blast from the past! In the 1998-1999 I worked for Automatic Technology Australia on the assembly line, later becoming a technician for them. This SGO2 system was assembled by me (has my inspection marks). As of last week it has taken long service leave and been replaced by a FAAC 740 operator. I think you will agree that the new system looks a lot nicer. It is quieter and more reliable. I think the customer got a good run out of my assembly work.
ATA AXESS 1000
Got to love having an indoor job when it is raining heavily outside. This is a ATA inverter driven 3 phase overhead motor being used to drive a telecopic sliding gate.
90 degree double slider
Here is an interesting installation where there was not a lot of room to manoeuvre a vehicle into the car park. A induction loop was installed in the ground to sense the presence of a vehicle to prevent the gates from closing onto a vehicle
Vehicle turntable
Did you know? Repairs are not limited to automatic gates and doors. Here is a turntable that I repaired a few years ago. Electro-mechanical repairs are my specialty. The panel van has since been retired after serving me well for 200000kms.
