SURVEILLANCE BY INSURERS- ULTERIOR MOTIVE? If you watched the Four Corners episode "Insult to Injury" on 1 August 2016, or even heard about it, you will know it asked whether insurance companies rely on surveillance and stalling tactics, not only to defend compensation claims, but to place undue stress on claimants in an effort to make them abandon their claim or drive them to contemplate suicide. When personal injury claims are defended by insurance companies, it is normal for them to hire investigators who often obtain audio and video recordings as well as photographic material, without the knowledge or consent of the claimant and their families. Common sense and previous studies, suggest that these intrusive and aggressive surveillance techniques can aggravate existing psychosis and paranoia, especially for people suffering from a psychiatric injury. Highlighted in the episode was the case of Brendon Bullock, a former police officer, who after submitting a compensation claim for post-traumatic stress disorder, was followed by an investigator. Mr Bullock during his former service as a police officer was exposed to ongoing traumatic events as well as death threats. However, despite being requested not to subject Mr Bullock to surveillance, the insurance company went ahead and hired an investigator. Mr Bullock believes the intrusive nature of the surveillance undertaken by the investigator aggravated his psychiatric injury and ultimately led him to attempt suicide. As a result of the intense stress of their work, police officers are particularly vulnerable to mental illness. It is a shame the men and women who are employed to protect us are treated like criminals by insurance companies when they can no longer work due to mental illness. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you or your loved one need help handling a compensation or insurance issue. 4941 8999
