AMSA update National System for Commercial Vessels Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) has postponed plans to introduce the national system for commercial vessels. The National System, was due to begin in July 2017 however, following consultation with the industry, the start date has now been put back another year to 1 July 2018. What does this mean for vessel operators? The levy will be postponed for 18month and the states will continue to issue Certificates of Survey and Certificates of Operation. The AMSA accredited Private Surveyors will continue to survey the vessels. Why? The postponement comes in response to industry feedback to the National System and proposals for a new levy and fee structure to pay for administration of the National System. The National System set out to assist commercial vessel operators and reduce red tape, increase safety and reduce costs. Sadly, none of these have been achieved.
