Forget the pecking order at work

Organisations are often run according to "the superchicken model," where the value is placed on star employees who outperform others. And yet, this isn't what drives the most high-achieving teams. Margaret Heffernan began her career in television production, building a track record at the BBC before going on to run the film and television producer trade association IPPA. In the US, Heffernan became a serial entrepreneur and CEO in the wild early days of web business. She now blogs for the Huffington Post and BNET.com. Follow the link below to see what she thinks about the pecking order in the work place and why things need to change. Age of entitlement: age-based tax breaks | Grattan Institute

There has been a lot of conversation happening around the budget and what the government should do to help ease the current deficit. Often the first suggested course of action is a cut to Health services and Centrelink Benefits. But a new Grattan Institute report suggests that there is a potential $1 billion worth of savings to be found in removing three tax breaks for older Australians. The Tax breaks in question are the Seniors and Pensioners Tax Offset (SAPTO), the higher Medicare levy income threshold, and the higher private health insurance rebates that are available only to older Australians. These three tax breaks have been introduced over the last 20 years and while they were affordable while the Government was operating with a budget in surplus, it is time to start reviewing them. With over 65’s staying in the work force longer and earning more than ever before the number paying tax has halved in the last 20 years. The proposed changes would have little effect on the 40 per cent of seniors who receive a full Age Pension, with the main people effected being Seniors who are wealthy enough to receive no pension or just a part pension. Often the argument for these tax breaks is that it is a reward for a lifetime of paying tax, but these tax breaks are a relatively new policy that previous generations were not entitled to. Another argument being that they help promote workforce participation and to assist in preserving retirement income for poorer Australian’s. But the reality is that of the Seniors who do lodge a tax return, none of the benefits go to the bottom 40%. With deficits running at about $40 billion a year the government is going to have to make some tough decisions in the future. With voters over the age of 55 making up over 38% of enrolled voters it could be a very unpopular decision, but one that could be a step in the right direction to ensure that we do not hand an unsustainable bill on to future generations. http://grattan.edu.au/report/age-of-entitlement/ #Quarles #AusBiz #CPA #Finance #Accounting #Perth #Money #Bookkeeping #Business #Tax #Seniors #SAPTO #Centrelink

ACCC takes Meriton to court over TripAdvisor trickery

It can be very frustrating when you purchase a product or service that doesn’t meet your expectations and in today’s market often people rely on social media or website reviews to help make decisions about their purchases. The number of companies who restrict people from leaving negative reviews, try to block them or even bully them to try and change a review is on the rise. One such company that is under investigation for similar practices is Meriton Serviced Apartments, which manages about 4400 apartments around the country. Australian consumer law prevents businesses from making or inducing false or misleading representations through testimonials or reviews, which means if you ever find yourself caught in this situation you are well within your rights to take the matter further. You can lodge complaints to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) or Choice which is Australia’s leading consumer advocacy group. Tenants win as Perth CBD commercial vacancies soar

It seems like only a few years ago that the rent for office space in the CBD of Perth was out of reach for a lot of businesses. The price of rentals averaged about $1,000 per square meter in the CBD five years ago. But this has dropped to as low as $250 per square meter in West Perth, with some owners even going so far as to offer years of free rent to entice renters. It is causing a huge change to who is renting the office spaces in the city, with a lot of businesses that couldn’t afford the previously high rental prices, now being able to move back into the CBD. The biggest growth in the past three years has been the education sector. Also moving in to the CBD is more non-profits, medical research and technology companies. #Quarles #AusBiz #CPA #Finance #Accounting #Perth #Money #Bookkeeping #Business #Tax #Rental
