I would like to introduce Muhammad Maarj (Mo) who has recently joined my practice, having completed his Bachelor of Podiatric Medicine at Charles Sturt University in Albury. I first met Mo 2 years ago when he came to Narrabeen as a student on clinical placement. He impressed me with his initiative and biomechanical knowledge as well as his friendly, engaging personality. In his final undergraduate year he was able to take advantage of international placements, being mentored by experienced Podiatrists, Sports Physicians and Orthopaedic Surgeons in Singapore and London. Having joined the multidisciplinary practice at the Narrabeen Sports Medicine Centre, Mo is also learning from interaction with the vast knowledge and expertise of the other practitioners. We are consulting together so that Mo can develop the advanced Podiatric Biomechanical knowledge and skills to continue to provide the high standard of treatment that our patients and referring practitioners have come to expect. We would like to take this opportunity to wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Tibialis posterior tendon dysfunction is a progressive deformity that develops over years. This painful condition can be prevented using functional orthoses and supportive footwear. The presenting symptoms can be resolved using a Richie Brace. #podiatrist #running #sportsmedicine #ligament #toe #richiebrace #podiatry #sydney #northsydney #medicine

My response to the controversial article in The Manly Daily. Below... 2 October 2016-10-02 I was disappointed to read the attached ‘news’ article in the Manly Daily Newspaper of Saturday 1 October written by Dr Ken Peacock, head of general medicine, The Children’s Hospital at Westmead. I have studied and practiced podiatric medicine and biomechanics, including paediatrics, for over thirty years. I constantly receive referrals to treat children with lower limb problems from medical practitioners, including sports physicians, orthopaedic specialists and physiotherapists as well as paediatric rehabilitation specialists who consult at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead. Dr Peacock is quoting a statement from a research article in the seventies that states orthotics don’t work and are therefore not recommended. The reasoning is because the orthotics did not create a long term change in the underlying abnormality, that of functionally flat feet from hypermobile joints. However, this is like saying that spectacles don’t work because, although vision is improved while being used, there is no long term improvement when you take them off. Dr Peacock may not have read research on the function of orthotic therapy, probably because the majority is published in sports medicine and podiatric journals. For asymptomatic children with structural or functional abnormalities there are dramatic improvements with the use of orthotics. The first is an obvious change in their functional position and alignment and an immediate gain in stability with greater balance control. This is life changing for a child who constantly falls or suffers fatigue with long periods of standing and walking. The other, probably more important factor is that the body will develop in its functional position. If left untreated the compensation in functional alignment for the underlying structural abnormality will cause secondary deformities as well as a structurally flat foot. I have treated children throughout their growing years and know that most do not grow out of their abnormalities. There are dramatic improvements in stability and balance with orthotics. This is life changing for a child who trips or fatigues with standing and walking and if left untreated, may lead to foot, leg, knee, hip, and postural problems that extend into adulthood. An untreated child is often poor at sport and chooses other activities. Orthotic therapy is not the total treatment for these children, however it forms a vital roll in overall health management. Ask any Sports Physician, Physiotherapist or Podiatrist. It also can help produce Olympic Gold Medals.
