Local Ingham Doctor Brett Scott awarded for supporting the future GP Workforce. Local GP Dr Brett Scott was this week recognised for his contribution to the Ingham and surrounding community as a dedicated GP Supervisor. Dr Scott began servicing the Ingham area many years ago as a GP before becoming a GP Supervisor over 16 years ago. GP Supervisors are highly trained specialist GPs who oversee the training of Australia’s future family practitioners in an apprentice-based model; shaping guiding and mentoring the professional behaviours expected of General Practitioners before they can be vocationally registered. General Practice Supervisors Australia (GPSA) Chair, Dr Steve Holmes said many GPs like Dr Scott were attracted to supervision because having a hand in the growth of competence and confidence of GP registrars adds another layer of complexity and interest to the role of a community GP. Dr Scott is one of 58 GP Supervisors being recognised nationally, having provided over 16 years’ service of the local community. “Dr Scott is being recognised for his commitment to providing the very best care to patients whilst supervising, inspiring and supporting the next generation of GPs and the future GP workforce”, Dr Holmes said. GP training practices and supervisors must be accredited by the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) and/or the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) to train GP registrars engaged within the Australian General Practice Training program. Dr Bastian Seidel, RACGP President congratulated Dr Scott, for so many years of service. “General practice supervisors offer one-on-one teaching, supervision, support, feedback and advice, they are at the coal-face of GP training. It is the apprenticeship model that supports best health outcomes for patients, and we are proud to recognise our colleagues for their many years of service.” “The RACGP is responsible for developing and maintaining the standards of General Practice in Australia, including the standards for vocational training of GP registrars. It is a quality assurance measure our patients can have confidence in – training practices are high quality practices”, Dr Seidel said. Community members can find out more information on the GPSA website Gpsupervisorsaustralia.org.au/community.
