Sometimes owners and their pets share a medical condition, like diabetes, asthma or an overactive thyroid. Joanne and Willow, the beautiful blue-eyed Bull Arab Mastiff cross, have an incredible connection as both are deaf. Joanne is part of 'Hear No Evil' Australian Deaf Dog Rescue, who rescue, rehabilitate and rehome deaf (and special needs) dogs. Joanne has taught Willow ten one handed signs in Auslan, including sit and stay. Read more about the organisation at https://m.facebook.com/AustralianDeafDogRescue/

They may be small, but once the grass dries off in Summer, grass seeds like these ones can cause our four legged family members significant problems. Grass seeds can get into ears causing infections and irritation, under eyelids leading to ulcers, and can penetrate skin (especially between toes) and migrate huge distances up limbs. They can be incredibly frustrating to track as they are so well 'designed' to migrate, so prevention is key. * Over Summer, keep the hair around your dogs feet and between their toes clipped short (especially for Spaniel and Poodle crosses). * Groom your dog daily to remove matts in the coat that grass seeds can embed into. * Clip the hair from the inside of your dogs ear pinna (flap) and consider using a stocking offcut if taking spaniel-type dogs into long grass.

ABC Rural

A heartwarming article so close to Christmas. Pets play such an important role in the lives of us all, but especially those who are elderly and live by themselves. It's great to hear of a group of volunteers who support this relationship and the physical needs of the pet as owners age and become unable to do so themselves.
