Many clinicians are trained in early stage rehab but not in health and performance training. And many PT’s are trained in health and performance training but not in rehab. We believe the gap between these two areas is why so many pain sufferers struggle to get out of the treatment cycle. Our clinicians are trained in the complete spectrum of physical health, from rehab to performance training, so that we can help you bridge that gap between pain and performance without risk of getting caught in the middle.

Pain is about more than just tissue damage! What we feel is often the result of what our 'protective system' deems appropriate. In a different setting, at home or in a township, the sensation this guy felt could have been vastly different. But being out in the bush and far away from medical support the protective system may have realised it's better to keep his pain levels suppressed so that he could get to help more quickly (and possibly to not look "soft" in front of his mates too). He may have later gone on to have massive amounts of pain, but if pain were only related to tissue damage he would have been a screaming, wailing mess from the beginning! Pain is complex!

Pre-operative rehab (pre-hab) is critical for improving post-operative outcomes. In light of this fact more and more doctors and surgeons are promoting a pre-surgical treatment approach. Our treatment plans give you full access to our facility to complete your pre and post-op care and our clinicians are trained in the full spectrum of exercise, from rehab to performance training, so that you can work with one clinician from the start to the finish of your care.

If you require surgery and decide to wait until the operation is complete before you start your rehab you are setting yourself up for a longer recovery than you need! The longer you go being inactive means you have a longer period of de-conditioning, weakening and potentially negative blood flow and immune system changes. Don’t delay getting a head start on your recovery!

War, Peace and Pain: "Staying anxious, sharpening your weapons and waiting in dreaded fear is a sure fire way to ensure that war will return" Carey here; I've just started listening to Homo Deus: A Brief History of Tomorrow by Yuval Noah Harari and, so far, it's fantastic. One section in particular perked my ears up and I immediately saw a correlation to pain and physical therapy. The author notes that historically peace was considered a time when there was a truce or when there was no war. Today, however, peace is perceived more as the implausibility of war rather than the absence of it. The war against pain can be a similar experience for many pain sufferers. With pain, 'peace time' is often perceived as a period of respite or relief along with anxious waiting before the next war starts up. So a question that can arise for a person in pain could be: How can I evolve and progress my pain "culture" so that "peace time" is actually expected and the idea of future pain is considered an implausible notion? Staying anxious, sharpening your weapons and waiting in dreaded fear is a sure fire way to ensure that war will return. In clinical practice this looks like the patient who has been told that their back will go out again and that they need regular treatment to keep it in place. It may look like the belief that you "have your dad's back" and are destined to a life of pain and disability. Fear and anxiety keep you from taking the the steps to reduce the likelihood of your pain returning. You wait for your next treatment to make you feel better rather than building the physical strength and integrity to better tolerate the stresses that life throws at you. You stay reactive, not proactive. To achieve a modern perception of Peace you have to take the prospect of your warring future into your own hands and become the creator of change. You have to create the physical, mental and social conditions that will lead to that change occurring and commit to creating a more resilient, adaptable and less reactive world.

I'm a tad biased but DAMN I love this clinic! To put it bluntly, most rehab is next to useless. Therabands and core strength exercises are too easy and too simple to bring about meaningful change in many pain sufferers, especially after the first week or two of use. To drive real muscle, joint and neurological adaptation we need to challenge the body with progressively heavier loads and with increasingly complex tasks. That's why this place exists! That's why we love what we do!

Geelong Physical Therapy Centre - Book appointment

Among others, two new patients came through this week with low back pain. Both are female and both mid 30's and both had pain develop from similar causes. However, each person responded to very different elements of our treatment approach and so each patient has a very different management and self-treatment plan. We understand that pain is weird and that treatment is about finding what works for you; not trying to match you up to the latest treatment algorithm or text-book case summary. As luck would have it with the school holidays we have had a few availabilities come up with Lauren at 4:15 and 7pm on Wednesday evening and with Carey at 9:15am and 1:30pm on Thursday. Book Online here: https://baycity.cliniko.com/bookings#service or call 5245 8679 to grab your spot! See you soon :)
