Importance of Stretching A lot of my patients complain about muscle tightness and pain. I found out most of them do not take pre-Sports warm up and stretching seriously. Tightness in the calf muscles can result from increased tension from active and passive mechanisms, which will limit ankle range of motion needed for neutral foot contact on the ground. If the calf muscles are tight and inflexible, which are important for normal biomechanics of walking and running, then extra pressure and strain is applied on the muscles and joints above and below the calf in order to produce the same motion needed. This can lead to pain and aches in those structures due to the increased tension. Furthermore, calf muscle stretches are commonly prescribed to increase ankle range of motion and to reduce the symptoms. Dr Mark Albert (BHSc, M.Pod) Podiatrist

Is knee pain associated with a flatter foot type? A pronated or flatter foot type can result in multiple complications within the knee. Many of which, myself and my fellow Comfort feet podiatrists, see on a day to day basis. The most common of these include: 1) Lateral or Outside knee pain: Clinical experiences highlight that lateral (outside) knee pain can be instigated by tightness of the iliotibial band, excessive foot pronation (flat feet), genu varum, and tibial torsion. This overuse pain commonly occurs in runners and cyclists, although it may develop in any person who is involved in activity requiring repetitive knee flexion or knee bending. E.g running downhill and climbing stairs. 2) Patella Femoral Pain / Front or behind of knee pain: Some of the most common causes of PFPS (patello femoral pain syndrome) are weak muscles (quadriceps and gluteals), tight muscles (hamstrings, quadriceps, and hip flexors) and most importantly abnormal limb alignment/ biomechanics (flat or high arched feet, knock knees or rotated hips). These 2 abnormalities can be addressed Comfort Feet Podiatry Group via our qualified podiatrists who can provide strengthening, stretching, training regimens and taping or foot orthotic advice. What is a Bunion? Bunion is one of most common conditions we are treating in our clinic. Bunion (hallux abdocto valgus) is an abnormal bony bump on the side of the 1st big toe joint, and it can occur on the side of the little 5th joint as well (Tailor’s bunion or Bunionette). What are the symptoms of bunion? Check for the following symtoms. • Pain or burning sensation on 1st toe joint or 5th toe joint • Numbness • Redness or swelling on the area In our clinic, we have treated many patients who suffers from painful bunions. We commonly see bunions among females who wear high heels or tight fitting shoes. Bunion can be hereditary. As such, bunions can be seen amongst young children and males as well. If you are concerned about bunions or unsure if you're suffering from bunions make an appointment with one of our podiatrists today and we will help you seek the best treatment.
